As I understand it, if it's a bolt or semi-auto, it's OK. But anything capable of full-auto is HIGHLY illegal to own. Legal-to-own war-era full auto weapons are hard to get, and getting one that just pops up in some vet's attic made legal to own is nearly impossible. That's how I've heard it stated anyway.

The M1 Carbine was semi-auto, and the M2 Carbine was selective. I've heard it's even highly illegal to have ANY M2 parts in a semi-auto M1. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has no sense of humor about the matter.
