Wink japanese 7.7 rifle

Hello everyone, new to the site and wanting some information.

My Dad was given a 7.7 years ago. the guy that gave it to him got it out a warehouse in Korea during the korean war. When dad got the rifle it still had the cosmoline in the barrel, so it like was new out of the box. Great huh, well not so great is dad let one of his hunting buddies talk him into sporterizing the rifle and the guy did a shortcut job. what i intend to do now is fully customize the rifle as a project to complete my gunsmithing school and would like some ideas from anyone who has already done this.

Ammo is really expensive for this rifle. By 7.7 I think your talking about a type 99 Arisaka? Like this? Collecting and Shooting the Arisaka Type 99 Rifle

How bubbaed up is this rifle so far?
BTW welcome to G&G forum Gunny.

Capt'n Mil Coll,
Yes Sir, the Arisaka model 99 in 7.7. The rifle really isn't that bad, just not done right. the guy took the original stock and just cut it off and sanded it down to look sporterized. the original sites are still on the rifle, but my final product will have a 3X9 Bushnell scope. I've been using and taking care of weapons and hunting rifles for 40 years, but I just decided to start building one of my own. As far as Ammo goes, I've been reloading for years, so that will hopefully limit that expense.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Ok there is no drop in sporter stock for a Type 99 that I know of. So whatever you do to the stock will be up to you. After you have the stock cut the way you want it you will have to refinsh. Go on the Mosin thread and look at refinishing a Mosin. As far as the action a 99 is a very strong Mauser type action. No worries there. If you are cutting down the barrel you will have to crown the end and make sure you dont damage the rifling - the lands and grooves. I suggest taking the rifle all the way apart when your close to done and clean it completely oil and grease it and then reassemble it.

I need some info on aquiring some ammo for a 7.7. just got one and plan on using it for deer season if it performs well. I really like the sights and the light-weight feel. Now all I need is ammo.
