Yeah buddy, Seabeescotty is going to build one for me. I don't know if the deer are getting tougher or my shooting skills worse, but my .243 ain't making it anymore. LOL!

On reading this I have to agree the main thing is practice at long range shooting. Going 2.5.or 3" high at 100 yards will give you a good impact out at 300 yards, but I suggest you set a target at 300 yds and shoot at that after you get your rifle set.

just a suggestion.

either rifle caliber will do fine, but my pet is the .270

For pure knock down power at long range .300WBY with a lazer rangefinder scope muzzlebrake for recoil and a bipod. This is easily a 1000yrd deer rifle. Oh yes, and a magic 8ball.

Don't listen to idiots like Rattle'em up. No one should be taking 1,000 yard shots at deer -- it's dangerous and irresponsible. Any larger center fire calibre will do the job out to 300 yards. However, of the two you listed, the .30-06 and 7MM mag, you would be better served by the later as the former looses some punch and velocity at ranges over 300 yards. Would recommend .270WSM.

No doubt the .270WSM or 7mmRM would be better cartridges for dedicated long range work. However, the 30-06 with standard 150s, 165s, 180s, has enough energy to do just fine at 600+ yards. With the right bullet choice handloaded to the best velocity, up to 750yds. And like said above, though I think he was being a bit of a smart alec, a 300Wby or RUM with the right bullet and load still carries 1000 ft lbs of energy at 1000 yards. I don't know anyone that shoots deer at such ranges, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. If you're going to take deer much past 200 yards on a regular basis, your choice of centerfire cartridge will be the least of your worries in preparing for such. Most rounds will kill reliably much farther than most people can reliably hit under field conditions. That said, most people who are taking deer at long range are usually setting up a "field bench" or something close to it for the job.

i hate agreeing with you cap'n tool but this guy seems a little harsh for his 1st post
or his 1000th for that matter.

when folks throw distances around like 1000 yds. does anybody have a clear idea how far that REALLY is?
it is hard to make out a man that is moving at 1000 yds.

can you see the target line?
it is 1000 yds. away.
