Model 70

Just browsed through my fathers gun safe and found an old .308 model 70 in quite good condition. Just wondering how well these rifles perform in the field and if they are accurate at all?

Here is some info on it. Winchester Model 70 rifles (Win. Model 70) If it is a pre 64 model it is highly collectible.

I was told, when I inquired into possibly getting one, that I couldn't go wrong with any pre '64 model 70...

The model 70 was known as the riflemans rifle. It was a favorite of Jack O'Conner.

I own a couple (but was also dumb enough to have sold a couple in the last 2 yrs too) and I'd rather have those rifles/actions as any produced today. If I told you I sold a very nice Kimber M84 Classic becuase it left me cold... next to my pre '64 Winny, would that tell you something?

Alright then, sounds like it's an old favourite. It was manufactored in '72'. It's got a nice old leupold on it, so i'll take it to the range and see how it goes. Wouldn't mind doing a bit of hunting with it if it performs well.

Sounds like you have a very nice classic combo there. I have a similar rifle (made in '66) that I used to collect a deer this past season. I think that once you shoot it, you might see what all the talk about the model 70 was/is about. Good luck.

Like everyone has said. They are great. Mine is in .375 H&H.

I am the opposite.

I have a Kimber 8400 Classic. If my model 70 was not a .375 H&H (my favourite cartridge, so i am biased) i would like the Kimber more. They are a nice rifle. (my Model 70 is a push feed though)

Model 70's are great rifles. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another one.

I have never ever seen in person nor held a pre 64 Winchester boltaction rifle !
Hopefully some day I will.
When I was a kid my parents subscibed for me several hunting magazines and it seemed every story writer used a pre 64 rifle back then and today it still rains as King.

I think my model 70 is made in 1974.Its a heavy varmint 22/250.I would buy another one anyday.

Model 70's are great rifles. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another one.

I own all three...pre '64, standard and Featherweight, a post '64 push feed and newer Featherweight classic, and I prefer all three to my (former) Kimber. Simply my personal taste. I suppose the fact that all four; '52, '54, '66 and '90 Winchesters would outshoot my 84M didn't hurt either.

That always helps. What cal was your Kimber? Mine is .30-06 it will shoot 1/2 inch with 168gr Hornady A-Max. Shoots just under 1 inch with just about everything else i have put thru it.

Winchesters are my favorite rifles, I own 2 but would like to get a few more. 1 is a pushfeed post 64 Model 70 Sporter in 270 Win, the other is a M70 Classic 375H&H and both sport synthetic stocks. I would like to have another Classic in 300H&H and a Featherweight in either 7mm-08 or 308, of course both with wood stocks. Wife has a beautiful Kimber 84M in 7mm-08, i've never seen that kind of wood come on a standard factory rifle. Would also like a Kimber 8400 Montana in a 7mm-08.
