colt vs.ruger?

yesterday at a gun show i was looking at a colt S.A.A. and a ruger S.A.A. side by side.
i got to work the actions and handle both.
they were both very nice guns.
same weight and feel.
colt $2200
ruger $539
what would i be paying for with the extra $1661 for the colt?
the name?
bragging rights?
status?
is the quality so much better that the colt is worth over twice the price of my pickup truck?

i am curious .
thanks bill

have to say the big differance is in the name and colletor value. the ruger has much better springs and less prone to breaking, but the colletor value just isn't there yet. kinda like a harley and any jap bike.

that is a good comparison.
thank you!
harley=big name and very cool, breaks down a lot and good resale value.
jap bike= reliable value for the money and looks to the untrained eye like a harley at 1/4 the price.

p.s. before i get attacked......
over the years Harley-Davidson reliability has improved by quantum leaps,

good defence Billy. I have road for the last 25 yrs. Harley has went up. But I have noticed Jap reliability has went down some. not sure why.
As far as Ruger vs Colt. I always thought the Rugers had more of a felt recoil. Other than that I agree with Okami515

Billy, I assume you are looking at a Ruger new Vaqureo? You should be able to find one nib, for $475+/-. Ruger has 50 years of history, Colt has 150+ history. My local gun shop has an old Colt SSA that they are asking $35,000 for, let's see, a seven year loan at 5.75 percent..........

PS: Real men ride Indians

yeah,
i cant just say harley sucks!

i dont own and dont plan on owning an investment gun.
i USE mine.

if i am going to sink a buncha money into something that i cant use i will buy gold.

i just thought i was missing something in the quality department.
thanks for the thoughtful replies.
bill

there is an over 3 weeks wages price difference between those two revolvers.
no wonder i dont own one!

Not quality

I definitely would not say a Colt has that much quality over a Ruger.
In fact, a new Ruger has (in my opinion) better design, better metallurgy,
and better quality control than the old Colts.

Perhaps the Colt was an antique in a level of quality that makes the collector interest justify the price difference. Also, there are buyers who
will pay a premium for the Colt name. When I was younger it was said having the Colt name on a revolver upped the price by $100.00.

these were NIB firearms

here are some more realistic prices i found online.
we all know gun shows are a RIP OFF!

Colt Single Action Army Revolver P1850, 45 Long Colt, 5.5", $1,259.50

Ruger Vaquero 45LC 5.5" SS

$472.99

so there is only $786.51 difference.

note that the ruger is stainless steel.

colt, its quality

the ruger, its quality to...minus the huge expense

i dont think i will ever own a colt because it doesnt make sense for me to pay that much for a gun

ive found a few good deals at gun shows, but mostly

ya its to much for what you want, i generally try to bust a deal with other patrons, or at the very end on sunday when the dealers are about to dip and wanna make a deal

how i picked up my ultra 87 12 gauge for 170 dollars even (it was priced at 180 but said hed drop 10 bucks and eat the tax on it, so i said, ok)

The only thing that increases more than a colt in value over the years is oil.

Not even close, some documented Colts bring prices in the six figure range.
I sure would like to own one, but $1200 buys three Rugers or a really good scope.

Thanks ander254, my Garlic Indian, last bike I'll build. I tend to get road rage with all the crazies out there.

Billy---if you want reliability, shootability and accountability go with the Vaquero, not the "new" Vaquero. I have never found a revolver to top mine. True they are big and a bit on the heavy side but then so is a tank, not to mention myself.
Oh and bye the by I have a "Colt Cowboy" fine shooting "lil" revolver and believe it or not that particular "Colt" line has increased slightly in price if you can still find one It may be due to inflation though, not "collectability."

YEAH AND YOU GOTTA BUY THEM IN THE LOW 6 FIGURE RANGE i guess i meant colts that an ordinary person can buy .
not a multimillionaire

it's not like you can buy one for 2 grand and sell it in 10 years to buy a house.
