Yes sir , lot of varibles at long range. Light, wind, mirrage. Still need a sighter shot.

I think you left out a few variables like humidity, rifle canting, barometric pressure, elevation and temperature. I forgot to add Moon phases and tidal movement.

Personally I like .33 magnum calibers and scopes with Hubble telescope technology.

Perhaps its just me, Although I can shoot well enough, there have been times that I have been slightly off target. I havn't completely missed yet, but came close to it a couple of times.

I hate woulded game and for that reason I am very fond of cannons. I have seen too many wounded animals because someone used a small caliber rifle at a long distance (250yds and up). They leave absolutely no margin for error.

If you have to use those small calibers (243 and smaller) on deer, then keep them within 100 yds where you can keep the impact within 1".


For hunting game at ranges of 500yds+ I suppose my weapon of choice would be a 105 loaded with HE.

Huh? With deer it's minute of grapefruit nd with moose it's minute of paper plate!

The Alaska Champion Outfitter has used the .243 for all Alaskan Game, it's shot placement not caliber!

If it is your land, stick a few straw bales out there in August or September. If that is the path the deer take, they will become accustomed to the bales...heck, they may even seek them out.

No bales...some plywood pieces, darkened up, will work. Even a piece of farm equipment might do. Get there before the deer. Wait. Shoot.

correct, it is not unethical if you are capable of doing it. however as ive said many times, most hunters dont belong taking shots at 100yds, much less further.

i got friends that i feel unethical if i give them anything more than a water pistol to shoot. lol. i agree completely with what you said. the "ethical range" changes with the shootes talents.

Baiting is illegal in Wisconsin. I don't find the laws here onerous, so I make life simpler by just following them.

But if it is legal in your area...bait away. Heck, put some corn or something on an old jacket...see if they get used to human scent.

I have always tried to get as close as possible, but you have some folks on this forum that like to crow about shooting animals at .75 miles or more. We never hear about the misses or wounded animals, do we????? That's right, they never miss. LOL!

Lol my uncle uses one of these for deer in MI (used to anyway hasn't in awhile). I don't know how far his shots were, I am guessing fairly short because i believe it is heavily wooded, but he said the deer he shot with that lifted all 4 feet off the ground lol.

Model 70 winchester i believe. I read a book on him lol. My uncle (different uncle they all hunt) owns a marine corps Model 70 30-06. Very plane jane rifle, but interesting because it is vietnam era.
