Lead Free .22lr

I was wandering how well a 22lr would work with say a 40gr solid copper bullet. Would there be any adverse effects on a microgrooved barrel?

Well may be the ought to make a solid copper 22 bullet. I'd try it.

Yep! It is a good idea and I think cci already makes .22 mag ammo that way.

I dont know what they make but as with berger bullets,if they make solid cipper,they would have to increase the rate of twist or use much lighter bullets due to the increased length of copper to equal the weight of lead.That would mean they would have no market for cartridges using copper in any of the millions of existing guns.If they use a lighter weight(say 30gr)then they must increase the amount of powder to get more velocity and still would loose range to the heavier lead bullet.Further,copper,tungsten,and heavyshot are all much more expensive than lead,so the price would increase dramatically.AH,lighter bullets do come out of the muzzle faster,but they slow down faster too.Further,all of this is playing right into the hands of the anti,s.Make it more difficult,and more expensive for gun owners,even tho there is no proof that lead causes that much harm.Lead is sverywhere,and you can outlaw it,s use for all industrial purposes,and still you are going to consume lead. sam.

Check out Kalifornia. They have already banned lead 22lr bullets in parts of the state.

Don't even get me started on the California lead ban. All the .22LR and .17HMR ammo I have is pretty much worthless to me starting July 1st. I guess it's paper and soda cans for me.

Does anybody know if the lead ban in CA is just for hunting only? Are you still allowed to bring ammunition that contains lead to shooting ranges for plinking and target practice?

The CA lead ban is simply a scheme for the antis to screw folks. There's no real lead "issue" at all. Lead metal in bullets (NOT lead compounds like TEL or in paint which IS harmful) is relatively inert. Folage grows well on little round top, and the animals thrive. I know of no manufacturer for .22LR that makes non-lead ammo.

Yes, it is for all kinds of hunting. My understanding is that you can't have a lead ammo and a firearm that uses it when hunting. So if you have your deer or hog rifle loaded up with lead free ammo, but have a self-defense .357 on your hip loaded with jacketed lead bullets, boom, you lose both your weapons and 500 bucks. That is how I understand it anyways.

Plinking and target shooting will be fine. Just be sure not to kill anything.

i have a box of fedrel solid copperround nose that is 40 grains i havnt shot any of them yet i am waiting for when i go and shoot some coons or something big becouse they should pack a punch

.22LR (and Longs & Shorts) use a 'heeled bullet' design that I doubt would work with a non-lead material - it needs the softness of lead to work.
.22Magnum is different, using the same bullet design as centerfire.
Lead bullet bans are simply a way to ban our ammo, resulting in a back-door method of gun-control.
1) No ammo, can't shoot those evil guns!
2) Can't shoot it, might as well turn it in!
3) The world is now a safer place (cue the feel-good muzak...)
