| I was thinking, if someone wanted to put up a little food for worse case scenario's what wood last the longest? I thought soup beans would last forever but I looked on the bag and it was dated for only one year. My question is what is the longest lasting food you can buy for this situation? Thanks

| Well if it helps when Tuts tomb was opened there were many urns filled with wheat and sealed and the wheat was still viable (it would germinate) after being sealed for over 3000 years. Proper storage is the key.

| BTW I wasn't tryin to be facetious, those beans poured into a sealable plastic tub or pail (they made a good 5 gal size perfect for this) and then filled with CO2 (Use dry ice if you want.) will keep those beans/rice/corn whatever fresh and useable for up to 5 years.

| Lost in the Ozone Again ![]() | Nuts N' MRE's........................They'll last forever. Lotsa canned food has 3+ year shelf life. You can buy a bunch of this, and then rotate your stock as the expiration date nears (i.e. consume as expiration date nears). Canned meats and nuts are good because they have a high calorie content per weight and volume. They're also pretty cheap. Vitamins and a calcium source you probably want to get too. Only problem can be if you don't like Nuts, Canned Food, and MREs.

| My thoughts exactly. I am probably better armed than most of my neighbors anyway so if SHTF they'll give me whatever I want.

| Store what you will eat. When TSHTF is not the time to find the wife and kids won't eat those Navy beans you put up. Also, make sure they don't cause gastric problems - eat the stuff first, and make sure it likes YOU! Thirdly, put up a good variety of food - rice & beans will get mighty boring after a few days. Most canned goods will last many years if stored in a cool dry environment. Flour generally is limited to a year, maybe. Ditto for corn meal. Freeze rice and beans in the freezer for a couple days to kill the eggs or larvae, then air dry and package securely. Grains are best stored whole, then ground when needed for use. It worked for Tut! He had a stash of SPAM and Twinkies too.... ![]() WallyMart is selling the single-meal packets of Mountain House freeze-dried stuff again. I get a few each time I go there - it adds up! Good food too - great for camping and emergencies.

| Store up beans rice, flour in bulk, keep cool. Canned foods are good for two years, and after that dried foods, from the Internet. The stores will have those tuna packets, and Hormel brand dried foods. More water for dried foods. Learn how to can meats and veggies. |

| You won't need long lasting food If it really hits the fan society will break down quickly as water supplies will cease to flow. In a very short period of time millions of people will kill each other off for what they think the other person has stockpiled. I rather doubt you need beyond one month's worth of stored water and food. Stay bunkered down then come out to a world of mass death. Not trying to frighten you but you must be realistic. No one will be manning the water departments and power plants in a time great crisis. |
