Question Opinions Re Walther P99, please!

My daughter and I saw a used, olive drab/black Walther P99 .40S&W at our local gun shop. As a consignment sale, they're asking $479 but I'm sure the final sale price will be around $440. Gun has original case, a mounted night-style front site (extra front sights in the pistol case), standard rear sight, and only one magazine. Looked at barrel with a bore light, seems okay but very dirty (doesn't anyone clean guns they intend to sell?)

I'm not at all familiar with Walther pistols (our other .40S&W is a Kahr).

My daughter really like this Walther P99 as the slide is quite easy to rack for her (she struggles with the Kahr, has little problem with the XD9).

Some questions:
- General opinions on the Walther P99
- Is the price in the ball park?
- Is that easy-to-rack slide indicative of a potential problem, or just how the Walthers are?
- Where's a good, reasonable place to pick up extra P99 magazines?

If this seems like a good deal, we'll probably put in a bid this week.

Thanks!

I dont know a whole lot about handguns, but I have heard that walthers are good guns. I am considering buying one when I turn 21. retail for the p99 in .40 sw is $740, so I think that $440 sounds like a good price to me. extra mags cant be too expensive. If your gun shop doesnt have any try brownells.com.

Thumbs up

Very good pistol. I have 3 and prefer the A/s action. Extra mags are about $25 if you shop around.

Thanks guys. It is an earlier model P99 (is not marked with AS or QA on the slide) and shop says the trigger is essentially AS. Comes with two magazines, the original case, two-dot rear sight, a hi-viz front sight (plus a couple extra regular visibility front sights), and all original paperwork/owner's manual.

Went back to the shop Tuesday and took a long second look, ran a snake through the bore a couple times and checked it out with a bore light... seemed to be pretty good shape. Asked their best price... they said $425, which I thought was a pretty good deal. So I decided to buy it

Picked it up Friday, gave a good cleaning (really needed it) and she looks beautiful! Will be a while before we get to the range though... sigh.

Personally, you could buy a new S&W SW99 which is very similar for a tad bit more and know what you're getting.

Looks real close to the Walther P99 to me. Here's a picture of the S&W SW99 and a picture of the Walther P99. Below is the link to the S&W website and all the versions of their SW99's. Remember the prices shown are only the MSRP and you can find them for much less. Personally, I'd look at a new one before i bought a used if I could afford the price difference.

Smith & Wesson

Picture on the left is the S&W SW99 and on the right is the Walther P99.
