| Senior Member | What is the big deal with Mosins? Ok. I have only been on this board for a few months but I already know I am going to get hammered on this question but I just have to know: What on earth is the big deal about Mosin Nagants? Most of the guys here are absolutely crazy about them but I don't get it. Now, I have only seen one at Bass Pro and I heard them mention one on Enemy at the Gates, but other than that.....I never hear about them. Somebody please fill me in!!! (Did I just open a can of worms?) |

| Senior Member | Why do many on the board like Mosin-Nagants, Lorcin? 1. The cost per each is low enough for anyone to afford one, be you a zillionaire businessman or a guy making minimum wage. 2. Ammo doesn't cost an arm and a leg and a fifth round draft choice. 3. There are so many variants, you can collect them like coins; and for a lot less than many rare coins at that. 4. All sorts of stuff for customizing them is available at a cost that won't break the bank or even bend it a bit. 5. Many if not most of the aftermarket items don't require the services of a gunsmith; you can do it yourself. 6. Generally, they are accurate enough out of the box to take deer at ranges of 50 - 100 meters. 7. Ammo is available in quantity. And no matter which arsenal produced it; or when; or which variety or arsenal of Mosin-Nagant you're shooting, it goes BANG 99% of the time. 8. Maintenance of the Mosin is so simple a child can do it, up to and including detail-stripping the bolt. 9. I love the smell of Cosmoline in the morning; it smells like history. 10. The simplicity of the Mosin design is such that there is very little that can go wrong with it. And if something does, the chances are excellent you can fix it yourself. That's why people like Mosin-Nagants. |

| Moderator ![]() | We love them because they are like the muscle cars and pickup trucks we American guys love - big, loud, crude and low tech. Cheap to buy, expensive to feed - considering we buy ammo by the case and keep shooting it up..... ![]() I have seven of the buggers - and I'm a lightweight in Mosin collecting!

Trader Rating: (0) | they are cheap, and very reliable, powerful, with cheap and easy to find abundant ammo not only that they look nice and are a blast to shoot, you can sportorize them to hunt deer, the 7.62x54r cartridge is ballistically similar to the 30-06 |

Exactly.. They're a fun, cheap gun with tons of history, and several variations.. But, if you wanna get hooked, just go shoot one.. A buddy of mine picked up a M38 and we went out and shot it one day.. I'm pretty sure he had his eyes closed during the first shot, but after the second shot he was yelling about a huge flash in front of the gun.. ![]() Of course it was just the fireball from the front of the short barrel and not so short burning powder in the surplus ammo. He and I were hooked!! I have a few limestone rock quarries around here that I can shoot in, and we have a blast turning big rocks into small rocks, and then small rocks into powder, at distance. Yep.. Just go shoot 20-40 rounds and you'll own one shortly.. ![]()

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | As have hundreds of thousands of Mausers, SKS's, AK's, etc..... I'm sure there are guys in Korea, VietNam, Germany, etc who have a U.S. GI's gun in their closet as well.

| Military Rifle Collector ![]() | Hey Lorcin dont tell anyone else but all the really wild and crazy guys collect the Mosins. Sometimes you really gotta wonder about them there guys. Anyone who collects them gets this thing called Mosinitis. Turns em into Mosin Zombies. They spend their days filling up .50 cal cans with their 7.62x54R ammo. Or they compare how red they can refinish the stock. Or how many Tulas they can get. Just be careful Lorcin Mosinitis may get you.

| Moderator ![]() | As well as in Vietnam. I personally know one man who was shot with one and they got the man who shot him. He now owns the Mosin that was used to put a bullet through his body in his collection.
