Mind Set On XD9 Sub-Com. Then Handled A M&P. Sub-Com.

I posted this in the Springfield forum as well. Sorry if you see it twice.
I've been looking for awhile now and so far went from looking at the Ruger LCP to the P95 9mm. then a guy through the SR9 in my hands. That was it SR9, well the recall with it and all, don't want to wait that long for a gun.
Then really took an interest in the XD9 9mm. sub-com. went to Basspro and handled the XD9 Sub, then the guy gave me the XD9 4", well the sub really felt top heavy. I understood it didn't even have a mag. in it and took thet into consideration.
So there it was XD9 Sub-com or the 4"? Tough to decide huh?
Well then I just had to read about the Smith & Wesson M&P, and how that felt great and the 3 diff. grip inserts etc.
So I went again the Basspro and held the M&P well....WOW! It felt sweet, so now I am truely torn on which to go with.
Here's how I see it.

XD9 Sub-Com. 9mm
Likes.
(2) Indicators for loaded/cocked
Grip Safety
16+1 Mag which gives you room for the pinky finger.
Dislike
Felt a little unbalanced in my hand. Top heavy.

M&P Sub-Com. 9mm
Likes
Grip felt real comfy + 2 extra inserts
Felt more balanced
Alot easier to work the slide. (hope this makes sense, I'm drawing a blank as the right term as to what it's called when you put mag. in then pull back to load it????) Either way this really made a difference when I had both side by side. M&P was hands down easier to grab and handle to pull the slide back.
$50 Rebate + 2 extra mags
Dislikes
No safety

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Doesn't the M&P have a similar safety system as the Glocks do?
What about a 9mm in a 1911 platform? You'll get your 9mm and a safety?

Check them out. Kimber makes them STI makes then and I think Para does also.

Well I would but the price difference I'm afraid may jump a bit. I started off with $300 being the budget. Well some how I seem to have gone up to the $450 range.

I'll look into them though.

I was talked into a mp because the guy at the store said if you ever needed to use a firearm quickly, you wouldnt have the presence of mind to click off the safety. (I dont know how true that is but the rebate deal with the Smiths sold me). I posted a test on that category of pistol. Search and see if you can find it.

IMHO The xd comes with useless extras. Are you going to really use mag holders? a belt clip on the OUTSIDE of your pants? To me they were worthless. However you cant beat 4 clips from Smith and wesson. Two of which were free!

The grip on the M&P sold me. The XD is better than a Glock's grip, but still a bit blocky for my tastes.

My M&P functions flawlessly, and is much more accurate than I am. I've never fired a M&P compact, but I have heard really good things as well.

Go with the M&P! Not only better BEFORE the rebate & free mags but better feel & interchangable grips. Also left hand friendly in case you need it (I'm left handed but always shoot both just in case I ever need to...).
S&W customer service is excellent also!
I've got 4 M&P's and wouldn't trade any!

Thanks guys! That's probably the one I'll go with the S&W M&P if the shop still has them for $449.
Thanks for all the help. Most likely go with the sub-comp. or comp. don't know if S&W calls their smallest one sub com or not.

I just got back from the range and was shooting the G19, M+P com, and XD9 4".

I love the grip feel of the M+P and put a nice set of holes almost dead center. The XD grip was almost but not quite as good as the M+P for me but my overall grouping was consistantly better on the XD. The XD absorbed almost all the recoil, it felt like I was shooting my 22. I also liked the trigger better. So far those are the two top 9mm for me and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Thanks I definately appreciate you input on these 2 guns. The M&P seems to be a bit higher on price as in $100 in most cases, but M&P has &50 rebate until the end of April + 2 extra mags.
I'm definately having a hard time choosing, but you as well as the guy at Basspro said the same thing, so that makes me feel better.

So the XD has less recoil? Odd since it seems like it's top haevy compared to the M&P.

I didn't shoot the xd 3" but I would imagine with a plastic base and empty mag that it would feel top heavy. Once you stick a loaded mag in there and empty a mag or two it will feel normal. Ideally, you want to shoot each one because sometimes you think something is going to be an issue and in actual practice it's no big deal. I could be very happy with either but I did group shots better with the XD and I loved the low recoil and trigger feel.

The guns I shot were rental guns and they have been heavily used and it looked like they had never been cleaned. There is probably 1500 rounds or more through each. With that in mind I didn't notice one slide being tougher than the other and both function flawlessly.

I plan on shooting them both again real soon, maybe even tomorrow and see if I can find a winner between the two for me.
