| Guns and hot vehicles I hope this doesn't sound like an idiotic question, but being new to the handgun carry and all, I always seen to come up with questions. Any known problems when leaving your gun in a hot vehicle? Obviously, there are times when I have to do that, including for the majority of the day. Being in the south with a car with all black interior doesn't help out matters. Any suggestions, comments are welcome, of course.

| ever had a problem. Ammo sits in hot tractor trailers for days before it gets to the store shelf. |

| I've never heard of anything happening, but like anything, I'm sure there's warnings on the package about storing near hot things or flames? And on a side note, there was a CSI episode last week or the week before, where a guy had someone threatening him, a gang banger, and his father-in-law used it to kill him thinking the blame would be aimed at that gang banger. Anyhow, he made it so the car would catch fire, spray painted the gangs logo on the car trunk. The guy was shot but totally by accident. It turned out, he had the gun, which by the way he'd gotten from the father-in-law, stored in the glove box. When the car caught fire, it got hot enough to where the bullets went off and that's how he got shot and what actually was the cause of death... So I suppose, the moral of the story is, if you keep the gun/ammo or both in your car, be sure to get it out if your vehicle catches on fire. lol

| In fire academy I learned that the most dangerous bullet in case of a fire, is only the one in the chamber. So if you are worried about that, leave the chamber empty. The rest of the rounds can explode, but they'd cause little damage to persons around them.

| I would hope that my car wouldn't get as hot as a fire! Emptying my chamber everytime I need to leave my gun in the car would seem to be so daunting (to me anyway)...but I see your point and appreciate it, stitch.

| Interesting, and very true posting! I served in the 1st Gulf war and because of a very strange combination of circumstances... I actually had a .38 Spcl round go off in the lower leg pocket of my flight suit. I was not injured at all, but, from the looks of the damage done... I could have been, although, I'm quite sure the worst case would have been very minor injuries. Living proof here that ammo exploded outside a chamber, anyway, is not the least bit dangerous. | MrsS, I'm not suggesting you empty the chamber every time you get out of the car, rather, have your car gun designated as chamber empty. It's only one less shot, and brief second to rack the slide...

| A lot of times we shoot our firearms to where you would think they were going to melt. Does'nt seem to bother the ammo in them...A.H |

| As a word of caution: If you intend to leave spare ammo in the car rotate it out on a frequent basis and use it as practice ammo. Vibration does nasty things to gun powder. The powder granules rub against one another rubbing off dust as well as any proprietary coating it may have causing a normally safe load to become a whizz-bang magnum which could have catastrophic affects upon firing. |

As to the original topic; a car interior will not get nearly hot enough to cause combustion of the ammo. If anything, it will prevent moisture from building up and corroding it (unless you're in a very humid and hot climate, which will make it worse, but inside the car shouldn't matter).

| Lost in the Ozone Again ![]() | Had loaded pistols thru several hot TX summers in the car; nary a problem. I do shoot the ammo to rotate it out about every 6 mos or so if not sooner, though. No failures to fire so far. Ammo deterioration would be the concern for me, but never had it happen.
