How to know if a gun works

I'm interested in buying a used gun from a friend. It's a Bryco arms .25 auto. I wanted to make sure it works so I found 3 old bullets and tried to fire them. None of them would go off. The bullets are Winchester 25 auto. Are there different size .25 auto bullets? It seems like the rim is not the right size and that because of that the bullet goes too far and does not get hit by the hammer properly. Would that be a problem with the gun itself?

There's only one .25 ACP cartridge. You don't want one. Most guns in that caliber are also offered in .22 long rifle, which would be a much better choice. The .25 is not as powerful as the hyper-velocity .22's and they cost much more. There is no reason for the .25 to exist, don't buy one. I don't know anything about Bryco arms, but my guess is you don't want one of them either.
If you just have to have a little pocket .22, try one of these, they cost about $200, I owned one and was quite pleased with it, it functioned flawlessly with any .22 ammo I put through it.

bryco guns are total junk.

Stay away from Bryco's, no, run away from Bryco's or anybody who happens to be shooting one at the time. Poor materials, shody machining.
If I had to entrust my life to a weapon I'd much rather a hefty chunk of brick to a Bryco.

Yeah, I was being polite. Your "friend" isn't doing you any favors by offering to sell you his Bryco....unless he only wants five dollars for it. Even then, they're useless junk.

You could always use it to throw at an attacker's face... but then again the aforementioned brick would probably do a lot more damage and at a lot cheaper price lol.

Bryco is a far cry from being a reliable weapon; it is, however, the epitome of poor quality.
I would chance to guess your friend knows the thing has a problem.

As everyone has said, Bryco guns are total crap-ola, along with Jennings. They were made in California and along with one other manufacturer I don't remember are known as the "ring of fire" handgun producers. Cheap, zinc metal and generally shoddy workmanship. I even read an article once about some guns being melted down, including several of these types of guns, and these guns ruined the content of the melted metal. In other words, the crappy metal these guns were made of contaminated the whole batch.

Stay away from that deal, save a little money and get a real weapon.

I dunno, I pick one up when I see them. I buy them when they are between $5 and $15. I normally get 150-200 shots out of them before the frame cracks. I have one now waiting to get turned in for $100 when the cops do a tax-payer sponsored gun buyback next.

Otherwise, they are useless. You know on the show "Cops" when some gang-banger is limping around because someone shot him in the butt? I guarantee he was shot with a .25 auto.

.25 autos are dangerous weapons; if someone were to shoot me with one I might resort to violence.

not a bad investment if you ask me. not many guns are worth 10-20x what you pay for them

I've always wondered what the response would be if they knew I was going to take that hundred they just gave me for a broken pistol and go buy an 8 lb keg of Win 231 with it?

Jazzand, how much was he asking for it? I have seen a few of them that stop functioning because of cracked frames, broken slides, general metal issues. But these usually result in failure to feed issues. Failure to fire might be something else.

Look it over and see if you can see why it wouldn't function mechanically.

I have one in an old browning and also in a beretta. Lots of fun to pop paper with, but not much of a self defense weapon. But what do I know, I think 9mm is to small for self defense.
