A .17 hmr is more accurate then a .22 any day. I love my mark 2 F its a great rifle but if your looking for something more accurate then a .17 your looking at the wrong calibure. The effective range of a .22 long rilfe in my mark 2 F using stingers is about 150 yards. I can go out as far as 200 yards but thats a strech and requires shooting high above what ever my target is. You should pick up a .22 they wont let you down, they are just plain fun and cheap to shoot.

The general thinking seems to be that the 17HMR is more accurate. That may be true at longer distances such as 100-200 yards. I'm not so sure it is at 50 yards however. My Mark II-BTVS has done five shot groups down to 3/8" at 50 yards with good match grade ammo. Not sure that there is real match ammo available for the .17, and for what is, perhaps they can do that well... don't know. As far as the ammo being the limitation, some get down to 1/4" at 50 yards with a .22, but I am not there (yet!).

It is true that match .22 ammo is not cheap, but neither is the .17, and $ for $ I would expect the .22 at 50 yards will give it a good run. I think with the heavy barrel Accutrigger Savage, the limitation is the ammo grade, the shooter, and the scope, and less so the gun.

How accurate is your .17HMR at 50 yards? I don't see many posting results for it, as it seems to be used more for a hunting gun than a target gun.

The Mark II's and the 93r17's are nearly identical guns except for the bore and chamber size. Depending on the model chosen there are some cosmetic differences. Some have plastic trigger guards, and some not. Some have a heavy barrel, and some don't. They are made in the same factory, and I would imagine to the same standards.

A five shot group covered by a dime is slightly under 1/2" center to center for group size. I've not shot many 5 shot groups but here are a couple with good ammo. The top number is actual outside to outside measurement at 40 yards, and the bottom is my estimated center to center at 50 yards (just scaled up 20%).

The accuracy of a .22LR is highly dependent on the ammo used, as well as the gun. I tested a number of loads and here is how they ranked. The ammo used for the target above ranked fourth. Of the ammo tested the very worst (Remington Viper) has a group size 5 times larger than the very best (Lapua Midas M). So I think in a good gun such as the Savage, the ammo has a large part in how well or poorly the gun shoots. The other big factor is speed. The most accurate stuff is subsonic.

Not sure where you are shopping, but I believe Dick's Sporting goods has some good prices on Savage rimfires. I think I mentioned it before, but if you want accuracy look for a heavy barrel, and make sure it has the Accutrigger.
