Some good rope

I was in the Home Depot the other day.

While checking out I saw they had some nice rope for sell. 100ft for 9.99.

I just started thinking of all the uses of 100 ft of rope in a shtf situation. You could set up a tent, set snare traps, Hang food, Use as a hoist, etc, etc, etc.

Stuff has got me thinking. Not to mention it would fit in any backpack. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of having a roll in shtf, but just thought i would post my latest find.

That style rope is not something you want to climb with or anything. I do have a coil of it myself for general camp rope, as you suggested. It stretches bigtime.

Keep some parachute line as well. You never know when you might need some string.

yeah i have 550 cord in the pack in my truck that stuff is tough as nails i use it for everything...well sparingly because it is not cheap lol

It says safe working load is 240something. I'm positive it will hold much more than that. Stuff is going to stretch a good deal before it breaks.

I have some 1/4", 300lb working load rope from Harbor Freight. If I rememember correctly its true breaking strength was well over 1000lbs. I cut it in half because 100ft was too big to keep in my light-weight Bug Out Setup.

Don't forget when buying rope always factor in it's wet strength as well as its dry strength. It should also resist chemical and abrasions.

i guess i'm a rope freak !!! My Step Father was an electisian and he gave me a rope that they pull conduit with...It was about 75 yards long and I just cut it in half 2 weks ago and now I wished I hadn't.
I honestly beleieve you could tow a Mac truck with this rope.
I also carry this one and others on my 4 wheeler.

You just can't have enough rope's ! LOL

Good rope can do so many different useful things, especially if you a few good knots. Bowline, clove hitch, timber hitch, to name a few would be helpful to know. If its stranded rope learning eye splices is a plus. If you have some rope sheaves you greatly improve your pulling/lifting strength, giving you a mechanical advantage. Basically, pulling straight down a 200lb man can lift up more than 200 lbs. My jeep always had a 50' 3/4" rope and a 100' 1/2" rope in it, usually some rope blocks and a sheave, and it is all used. I don't know the safe working load rate of 550 cord, but all I can say is that number isn't made up, its there for a reason so don't go over it.

Rope is like ammo, you can never have to much. I keep a couple of 300' spools of 550 cord in the car, house and in our packs. All my boot laces are 550 along with every lanyard and anything else I can wrap it around. My ATV has about 30' of strong hemp rope. I don't care to much for the nylon rope but it's better than nothing.

speaking of knots do you know if a palomar knot would work as well with rope as it does with fishing line.

I'd think it would, looks like a bowline on a bight but sinching on the hook instead of itself.

And to add to what JimKim said, factor in damage to any rope from the sunlight after time if used outside also.

I keep parachute cord stashed everywhere. Even my boot laces are twice as long as normal so I always have extra cord.
