45-70 lever action tube mag

Can you have a spitzer bullet in your chamber and 1 in your magazine in a lever action tube magazine rifle? I would think that as long as there isn't a spitzer bullet on the primer of another cartridge it shouldn't be a problem. I would like to know because I want to purchase 1 and use Barnes' X-bullets.

Normaly your reasoning is why one DOES NOT load spitzer rounds in a tube mag. I won't say it's OK for you to do that if your rifle will cycle the rounds properly, I'd hate for you or someone to follow that example and "forget" there was a round in tube mag then stack another in there. The resulting slam fire would ruin the day for sure.

I would give the hornady leverevolution ammo a try.

Yes you can chamber a spitzer round. You can also load 1+1 that is one in the chamber and one in the mag. The only thing you need to be careful of is that you don't load the magazine with point of the bullet on the primer of the round in front of it. To keep from loading in an unsafe manner I would open the action throw a round in and chamber it then load the mag with the next spitzer round. Ive done this with my .30-30.

That is exactly my intention. Glad you have experience with levers.

You can use the new leverevolution by Hornady and not have to worry. about the same price as quality ammo and better performance.

I want to use heavier, tougher bullets for bears. I'm looking at a heavy Barnes X.

If I were going to hunt deer I would use the Leverevolution though.

+1 on using the Hornady Leverevolution...from another 45-70 lever action fan.

Also, there's some helpful reloading data in the Hornady 7th Edition Handbook (page 661/62) about reloading a stout 350 gr. RN or FP that will put down a bear right now, even a grizzly, with a well-placed shot. The caliber and load of my choice for trips into the backwoods where the "bears" and the bees are. My favorite powder for this load is the IMR 4198.

I understand, I tried the new round in 30-30 and was very impressed. It has quite a bit more zip.

I wouldn't for fear that I'd get cold and tired and screw it up!

If you can afford it, and want more power, I'd just get a bigger gun.

For my purposes there isn't a gun more suitable, I want a good short range "Brush gun" and I like the Marlin levers look.

My two favorite brush guns, in lever action, are the Marlin 1894 .44 and 1895 .45-70 guide. Nearly every time I head out shooting, one of them is always with me. My wife really enjoys shooting the 1894 .44, and she is getting very accurate with it.

Viking, have you looked at the Barnes TSX for the 45-70? They've got a 250 and 300gr flat nose specifically for the 45-70. No need to fuss with a single loaded mag that way. Tried to find an image of them on their site with no luck. They call it the TSX.

I agree Preacher. I'm just not sure why anyone would want to use a spitzer in one. However, the idea is interesting. Too bad they haven't come out with those lever action bullets with the plastic noses for the .45-70 like the did with the .30-30. I think that's what you would want.

Could you do anything with sabots that would strike your fancy?

I want to use the spitzer in a HEAVY X-bullet for bears, the leverevolution isn't as heavy, or tough as I would like.

. . . what you say can work. But, it is easy for anyone to lose track of what they are doing in the field with the mind on a great hunt.

So, for safety (yours and other people) I would not advise taking
sharper pointed 45-70 bullets into the field.

If you really want to combine safety and flexibility of bullet design choice there are some really high quality single shot 45-70's on the market. One way to look at it - as so very often you only get the one
great shot in the field many action designs really do become single shots.

HUH? Guess I'm missing something, you want a "good SHORT RANGE brush gun" and pointed bullets? Why?? (isn't this an oxymoron or something?) Unless I'm bady mistaken, the purpose of pointed (spitzer) bullets is to retain down range velocity, hardly needed for a "short range brush gun".

HE likes the ->barnes bullet<- hello that bullet. Ive loaded my .30-30 for years with spitzers. I know guys who have .30-30 H&Rs and have killed deer at better than 200 yds. The bottom line is the man likes what he likes. JEEZ LOU-EEEZ.

Even with spitzers the 45-70 is a short range cartridge.

He wants heavier, so why not Barnes solids, Garrett Hammerhead or Boarslammer? These are in the 400 - 500 gr. range and designed for the Marlin Guide gun. Should do well on bear and such. My personal favorate for the 1895G is the 300 gr, Nosler Partition, works great on boar. There was an article, Shooting Times I think, about using the 1895 Marlin in Africa. They used 400+ gr. solids and shot clean through 2 Water Buffalo standing side by side. What are you hunting that needs more penetration than that?
