New M39 :)

Ok, so I am sure some of you remember the post where I was deciding between a few guns. Well it came down to it, and I think I am going to put the Westinghouse on layaway, and I just got my M39 in the mail today!!
It was in literally NEW condition.
And yes, it is a SAKO. 1944 to be exact.
The wood is brand new, it came with an original sling, and the tag from the arsenal was on the gun in addition to the importer tag.
1. What kind of wood are they?
2. The bolt is literally so new that it could stand to slide in and out a bit smoother. What could help out with this?

, Thats one of the nicest ones I've seen, that stock looks great. I would say you definitely made the right decision. Congrats on the purchase and I look forward to seeing the Westinghouse when you get it.

Welcome to the M39 side of MN's. Yours is another beauty. Arctic Birch really agrees with this rifle, and it seems like many of the bolts are a little rough, but the damn thing will knock the eye out of a gnat at 200 yards.

It has become my favorite rifle to take to the range, because I can actually shoot a 2" pattern (near the 10 ring) using iron sights.

Yur gonna love it.

Ya, I got it from SOG.
Very happy with them. Ordered Monday, arrived in Texas Thursday!!!
I didn't even know it was going to come with a sling.
I recommend the hand pick. Best 10 bucks I have ever spent.

I agree with everyone about the wood. I am loving the look of this rifle!

The only problem I had with SOG was: If you were in a PRK border state you would have had to send in an additional certificate which took about a week to finally get to them as their e-mail server is always full.

They have my 03-FFL on file, so I still don't get it. Nobody else requires the extra BS certificate. But I digress, and now that the certificate is on file, would probably order from them again.

The rifles... M38 & M39 were fine.

Looks Just Like My M39's...Beautiful ! I would not touch the bolt , If it looks that new, put a little oil on it, and some white grease on the rear Camming slot and work it in the rifle a few times..Where is the Hang Tag , and what did it say. A close up picture would be nice so I could decipher it for you.
I leave my Hang tags ON the gun....

acarpenter, I have two suggestions that might help.

First, disassemble the bolt and polish the bolt body and the extractor with Simichrome. If you are feeling bold, you can try using rouge cloth sandpaper (that's what Dad used to call it), but if you do use it, use it gently. This will smooth out the bolt and its action some.

Second, clean the receiver thoroughly and give it a very light coat of fluid grease. My Mosins seem to prefer that to gun oil. Yours might too.

Second, Rich, I wish I could have left the tag on but it had fallen off in the box during transit. As a matter of fact, I almost didn't even see the tag or the SLING in the box before I put it in my closet for who knows how long!!! Glad it fell out!
However, it would be awesome if you could decipher anything from the tag for me

Also, I think I will just leave the bolt be. I put some Hoppes oil on it, and it was fine at the range today.
Do anyone's M39s dislike any specific ammo? I don't think mine liked the Russian 1940s lead core light ball one bit. Any suggestions on ammo I should try?

I was shooting Brown Bear (no corrosive ammo in this baby). After the third round I was hitting the 9 and 10 ring almost every shot, and hitting the "dinger" at 300 yards 2 out of 3.

I will try some hand-loaded ammo the next time out. the M39 doesn't seem to like my current batch (the Russians love it).

Maybe I will try the Brown Bear.
This ammo doesn't seem to be too accurate with the others Mosins I have either.
I think I will have to get used to the sight a bit too. That wide front sight blade throws me off for some reason.

Ok, here is what I translated...
It is a 7.62 model 39
serial # 252644
Bore diameter is 7.64
No Forcing Cone in breech.
Level of corrosion(wear) is 3 which is the worst allowed
It was repaired at Arms depot V1
Inspectors were V.O. and O.H. ???
Date of inspection was Oct.14,1967
aimpoint was 150 meters
shooting distance was 150 meters
It appears to have been tested to 200 meters as well.

Hey Moose,
On the note of the Level 3 wear, would this be something that I could improve upon, accuracy wise, by handloading?
I did the old redneck muzzle wear test with the bullet, and it stuck out 1/4 of an inch. I thought that was a sign that it is probably good and tight?
Also, this may be a noob question but what is "No Forcing Cone in breech?"

My bore was 7.60 (new?)... Corosion was 2.

The thing is... if you measured these things on a Soviet 91/30 or M38 you would probably be very happy with the Finn.
