For small critter hunting I prefer to sight in for 60 yards. The .22LR has quite a sharp drop off in the trajectory, which becomes a pain if you sight in for 100. For the Remington Cyclone which I find to be a fairly fast and accurate load at reasonable cost, if you sight in for a zero at 60 you will be about .5" high at 40, .4" high at 50, and .7" low at 70 yards. This means you can pretty much hold dead on out to 70 yards. Also it crosses zero at 20 yards, so do your initial sight in at 20 to get it to zero there, and then fine tune it to a 60 yard zero, or often more conveniently 0.4" high at 50.

If you go the zero at 100, then obviously you will be fine at 100. However you are going to be 2-3" high from 30 to 70 yards, which I would consider to be the prime hunting range. So you will have to learn to hold under by that much for most targets.

Sighted in for 60 you will be about 4.5" low at 100. I would rather estimate a hold over from 70-100 yards as I quite infrequently shoot at that distance in any case.

Just my thoughts,

Ron

50-75 yards will give you a good start for working up to 100 yards. Is it scoped?

my semi is set up for 30 yards, and my old cooey bolt is set for 100 yards. that old cooey will part an ants butt cheeks at 100 yards, my malin semi, not so much.

yeah, yeah, i know. what good is a .22 set for 100 yards? i am just freakin amazed at how far i can shoot the thing accurately.

My dad taught me long ago to not shoot songbirds.

I zero my 22LRs at about 35-40 yds for squirrel hunting. No more than that. Thats about as far as I shoot squirrels at. 22LR is for close up work in dense woodlands where your sight distance is severly limited.

I defiently agree with AH don't shoot birds. Unless it is a blackbird or crow.

I would sight it in for 75 no greater because of the drop in trajectory.

Thanks A.C I was thinking about this Thread when i woke up this morning, I guess when you get older you may enjoy nature and Gods creations even more or look at them a little differently.
A harmless bird shouldn't be an object to shoot.
Since I've left the work force and at home more I enjoy and know some of the birds around my home.
I'd hate to know some neighbor would shoot some of them for a thrill.

agreed. i love sitting on my deck and listening to the birds while i have my morning, late morning, lunch, early afternoon, late afternoon, pre supper, supper, after supper, evening and late evening coffee. me and the old lady just sit out there and enjoy them often. my hummin birds hovering around the feeders, and i think the little guys are finches, not sure though. they got the nicest little cheeping noise.

When I was younger I didn't think that way. But like AH said you do enjoy nature more.

I sight mine in at 30 and then shoot at 50 and it is still dead on, i don't shoot much further than that with a 22, and if so a little holdover isn't too hard to do.

I shoot mostly sparrows and thats because they get in our Purple Martin house and kill the babies.

I do shot Crows and Starlings.I get two or three shots a year at the local Crows, they learn real quick, the young ones can tell if I have a rifle or stick, the old ones can tell if the rifle is loaded. Starling aren't to bright, they feed in pairs and if you shot the female first, the male well comes back to her, so you can get a second shot. The females do not come back.

Really depends on the typical range of critters in your area. I vote for a 50 yard zero as best for most shooting applications with a .22 rifle, maybe 75 with a scope.

I like the idea of a closer zero rather than longer with the .22.
