| The ol' Coot ![]() | Yard Deer! The Gang's Here!
We've been keeping a low profile up in the meadow, and it's paid off! They're grazing within thirty feet of the house, in the front and back yards. Like I said, our deer here aren't all that big, but we have enough to keep from starving! CGO and I were running from window to window, giggling like giddy kids, watching the herd move around the house. We don't have a great camera, but got these pics of our herd, to share with everyone. It's so much fun to watch 'em, They see a flicker of movement in the window, and freeze. Then they decide there's no danger, and go back to grazing. Ther were twelve right around the house, and the rest were at the pond, where the horses' salt block sits. The vegetation is coming up so nicely, they can't resist, and of course, we have been letting them have the run of the place! I hope everyone enjoys these notsogood photos!

That bench gets used quite a bit, and they've gotten used to the noise. As long as we leave the woods to them, they're happy! They've been coming into the yard for the good stuff that's sprouting up. Namely the clover. It's awesome to walk from window to window, and watch the deer in the yard!

AH, them are meals on the hoof! I just leave 'em be, til the larder's empty! That way, they're always fresh, and ready to eat. Ain't found a 35 Remington, yet. Could it be a Marlin or a Winchester? Been keepin' my good eye open, and hopin' to spot one for ya. That herd has been around since we bought the place. We've seen 'em gather up to about 24 head, and come onto the place for a feed. The last two days, they been makin' us stay in the house, so we don't spook 'em. But they always come back! Even during hunting season.

| Deer in Backyard
Great pictures scotty. I live in Connecticut and have deer in my backyard all the time. Unfortunately they also eat a lot of the plantings my wife planted years ago. Last year we had two bucks and a doe out back with the bucks fighting for the right to mount the doe. I've seen it on TV but never in real life. It was quite a sight. We stood there in our dining room watching all this and were fascinated by it. It is rare that I ever see a buck.

Bucks are something to stay away from during the rut. They aren't as big as a moose, but out here in Ok., they run around on flint rock, and them lil hooves are sharp! We had a beautiful ten point out with the horses, last fall, but when gun season opened, I never saw him again. But I did get a nice little six point.

Have you put out a deer feeder to keep them coming in? We get quite a few at the new place and turkeys finally started coming in last Wednesday. I would sit outside for an hour every night and play with my turkey calls. They would gobble like crazy from a field over and finally found there way to my yard. Hubby killed a 25 pounder with a 11.5" beard. When he killed a deer last year it was from our heated blind. Which means he opened the sliding glass doors and shot from the house down in the basement. Have you ever heard of anyone hunting in their underwear? |

One of our members from the great state of Texas claims to have hunted in his underwear! And no, I don't have any feeders, the deer love the saltlicks I put out for the horses, and someone may have planted the clover and such, before we moved here. But CGO would kick my caboose up between my shoulders, if I shot a deer from the house. And I don't want to spend the rest of my life looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame! The deer stand is only 60 yards from the house, on the southeast corner of the meadow, so it's not far to go. And I love watching them, as much as I love to eat venison! This is kind of a safe zone for 'em, except when the freezer gets low.

We're going to invest in a camera that takes closeups, and get some GOOD pics! The one we have just doesn't do 'em justice. I've sat in the stand and just watched 'em play in the meadow. I've even had 'em sneak up on my blind side, and stare at me, waiting for a movement, and then it's hiarious to watch 'em haul a$$ across the meadow! We were blessed to find this place, and it's everything we'd hoped for. We watch the bobcats, or lynx cats, out in the field, and the eagles, and the falcons, and just all kinds of wildlife, and each time regret not having a camera to get pics of 'em. Someday!!

I sure will, as soon as we have a camera that will reach out, like my old mod. 70! We love sharing the beauty of this place, and have decided to extend an open invite to all members who are in the area, and want to come and visit. We're even going to start a rogues gallery of members who come by. We have one big expanse of wall, where the pics of G&G visitors will be displayed! The wildlife here is a wonder to behold, especially after living in civilization for so many years.

Scotty, I'll try and get some pictures of the deer in my back yard soon. A couple of years ago I was able to videotape two fawns without getting real close. I was a little concerned about mother coming after me. I also have wild turkeys in my yard regularly and have as many as 20 at one time. My place is a regular zoo. |
