Two new Mosins in the house, almost.

I dropped by two different Big 5 stores today to peruse their M44s and 91/30s on sale for $89 and $84 respectively. Nothing interesting at the first. At the second I bought 2 interesting examples. The first is an Izzy ex-sniper with beautiful brass handguard end caps. It has an unmodified scope number. All stamped matching, good bore, passes the bullet test, passed a field gauge test. I don't remember the date.
The second rifle is rather odd. It's a '44 M44 that has NO arsenal stamp on it. Has anybody seen this before?? There are small Izzy marks on various components but nothing on the barrel. It is all stamped matching except for a line out mag., good bore, passes the bullet test, passed a field gauge test.
Before you guys say:

I have an excuse! I could not bring them home today since Big 5 had problems with my Kalifornistan COE. I have to call the Kali DOJ tomorrow to sort it out. I'll post detailed photos when I pick them up.

Great find congrats! And yes you will find a few that have the arsenal mark scrubbed off .. and no I dont know why they did it ..

Ok here are the photos.

First the "mystery arsenal" 1944 M44. I can find absolutely no Tula or Izhevsk markings on the barrel or receiver. I have perused the markings photos at 7.62x54r.net and can find nothing at all. The other components on the rifle are a mix of Izhevsk and Tula stamped parts. What do I have here guys??

First time I've seen a circle R on an M44, but I'm thinking probably not a Remington barrel. But weird things happen.

No date... No Russian arsenal. I'm thinking mafia.

But certainly a strange one...

There appears to be the left side of an Izzy triangle and arrow just below the first of the two "1's" in your yellow serial number... like it was mostly ground off before the new number was stamped.

I've drawn a green triangle to show where I see it. The little "backwards r" in the middle is the arrow with the top and right points shaved-off:

Interesting, I didn't see that. I wonder why they would have gone to the trouble of doing this?

Good eye JAC. And the I in the box next to the (R) could be an arsenal refurb mark. Could an M44 be a capture weapon? I didnt think they were used in any war.

Here are some closeups of the partial marking and an Izzy stamp on one of my 91/30's for comparison. To me, it looks like a 7.

It doesnt look to me like it is anywhere near a remington barrel, but a scrubbed 1944 m44 barrel..I dont know why they would do that but I have seen some strange mixes comming out of mother russia so nothing would surprise me ,,I cant tell from the pics if the reciever is 1944 or ww2 vintage or not ?? Anyone??

I have not seen or read of a Remington round receiver. But like Marion says, some weird stuff has been showng up. That definitely is closer to a Remington stamp than anything else. The proof marks are in an oval.

My guess is a "scrubbed" / rearsenaled M44 from DDR. What JAC sees as a Izhevsk stamp could also be this (based on it's position), but no one can be certain:
