What do you want? A rifle or a handgun? And with that kind of cash, you can probably get 1 or 2 of each. or 1 of each and some accessories for both. Or 1 of either and a safe to keep it in. Many options out there to choose from. Good luck.

What is your eventual goal with a gun? How many guns do you intent do own?

If it's deer hunting, start with a .22 LR rifle (to learn how to really shoot), and then go for a "deer rifle" in a larger caliber.

If it's self defense, start with a .22 LR handgun, and from there get a major caliber pistol--9mm and up.

I'd buy three guns. 1) a .22 LR rifle (probably a Ruger 10/77 bolt action)
2) a Remington 870 express 12 or 20 gauge shotgun
3) A deer rifle--.308, 7mm-08, or .270.

The .22 will be a cheap way to get in a lot of practice shooting. The shotgun is necessary for rabbit hunting in most places, and you can use it for deer as well. The deer rifle is only if you live in a state that allows rifle hunting for deer.

GUN TYPE : SHOTGUN 12 GAUGE

PLEASE LET ME HAVE SUM ADVICE
Remington 870. If you want an inexpensive one, you can usually find a 870 express (which has a cheaper finish) for under $200. Inside, it's the same as any other 870. The 870 has a great reputaion.

Mossberg has good shotguns as well.

I'm new too. I'm thinking personal defense. Something in a 45 acp. I want something absolutely reliable with a good stopping power.

Good stopping power is ONLY good if you can hit your intended target.

It may be better for some people to get a smaller caliber that they can shoot accurately and put multiple well aimed shots at the target versus one big bang and hope it hits shot.

Get what you are comfortable with and can shoot well.

I had a guy try to sell me a Walther knock off in a .320 today. That thing would slow down my girlfriends cat. There has to be a better caliber in the middle? 40?

I would probably start out with a 9 mm instead of 45, they have pretty heavy recoil and you can practice A LOT more fore cheaper with the 9

The Moose has it 100% right get a bolt 22 a bolt big game(308,30-06, 270,) and a good shogun(Rem 870 or Mossberg pump) if you want a semi auto 22 the Ruger 10-22 or TC are good choices. and to Joe a 9mm would be a better starter and work up to a 45.
