Garand hangfire

I have an M-1 Garand that shot several 8-round clips problem free. It was thoroughly cleaned, lubed and stored for several months. Recently, I took it out to the range and shot seven clips from different lots as well as various lots of M-2 ammo and some Remington Core-Lokt ,30.06, 150 grain new ammo.

On each and every 7th round the rifle jammed, leaving the seventh round rear-end pointing upward out of battery. After removing the 7th round, I manually cycled the 8th round into battery, fired it, the rifle cycled perfectly ejecting the brass and the spent clip leaving the bolt open.

Anybody familiar with this malfunction? Thanks for any input.

Ah, the infamous seventh round stoppage. First make sure the follower and slide that the clip fits in is moving freely side to side. Thats the part you press down on when you want to close the bolt. Then try stacking the ammo in the clip opposite from what you have. Thus if you have the high (last)round in the clip on the right, stack it so the high round is on the left. This was a problem in early Garands, but there were supposedly design changes that remedied it.

do you have a adjustable gas plug for shooting that remington?

I would go to the range again and shoot one type of ammo and see if it happens again. Stay away from commercial ammo unless using a adjustable gas screw. Hopefully that isn't causing your problems

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if loading the ammo differently in the en bloc clip helps. I'll also see if my rifle has the adj. gas screw. I'll re-post if I find a solution, in case anyone is interested. If something else should come to mind, please post it here. Thanks again to everybody. TNT

The adjustable gas screw is a commercial made part. You should not fire commercial ammo without it. You run the risk of bending Op Rods or the worst is a cracked heel of the reciever.
