[quote=.280Rem;501812What you gonna do with it mostly? Whitetails? Go 7-08. well i would use it on whitetails if the ohio laws didnt suck, but mostly to have some fun at the range and do some long range chuck snipen. i also plan on doing some black bear hunting in the next few years.

If you're going to use it mostly for the range, and then deer sized game, I'd definitely recommend the .308, purely based on price. The .243 and .270 make awesome range cartridges, and great hunting rounds as well, but are too expensive to just shoot around at the range. If you're handloading, then that might change things. Until then, you really can't go wrong with the .308Win. |

| Handloading is the only way to go unless you are shooting a box or two a year. And yes with handloading there will only be a minor difference in cost between the cartridges -- essentially only the powder. Handloaded the .243 would be cheapest, 308 next, and 270 a bit more. However, we are probably talking a penny or two per shot. Ron |

Too much noise and recoil for what you're gonna do, in my opinion. If that don't bother you though...have at. Otherwise, if not handloading, Id recommend the .270, 270WSM, 25-06, 243, or the like. I think you can get any of those in the M700. The 25-06, IMO, would be the best all around of those for your purposes. |

Whats wrong with a Ruger Hawkeye ? These rifles sell well under 600 dollars but should cost a 1000 !!! If you ever get a chance to look a Hawkeye over you'll be sold on them. It's got it all ! It's not yore Daddy's older M-77... LOL |

AH...Ive heard a lot about the old 77 not being a very good rifle. I am glad that I was one of the fortunate ones who got a good one. Its an M77R in 300WM. I have had it for about 30 years and it has dropped a lot of game. From pronghorn to big browns. She is getting like me, a bit old in the tooth but she still shoots sub MOA from a bench. I wish that I held up as well as she does.
