The .270 is a great cartridge, but a bit more expensive to shoot than the .308. I used to have one, and wasn't very confident with it. I often wish that I had it back, but I have a 30-06 that is a lot cheaper to shoot, and not too much harder on the shoulder.

I have a remington 770 in 7mm mag and I absolutely love the gun. All of the bad reports ive read about, and i guess om fairly lucky. I have never had any problems out of it. Its a tack driving SOB! I shoot it quite frequently (every weekend) and keep er cleaned.
Lots of people give reports of them being great guns. They use Remington barrels, and thus should be very accurate. I just have a hard time recommending them after seeing them fail in person. Again, I am a huge Remington fan

[quote=.280Rem;501812What you gonna do with it mostly? Whitetails? Go 7-08.

well i would use it on whitetails if the ohio laws didnt suck, but mostly to have some fun at the range and do some long range chuck snipen. i also plan on doing some black bear hunting in the next few years.

.243 would be nice for the range and chucks, but a bit small for black bear. 270 would fit the bill for black bear and do ok at the other two.

If you're going to use it mostly for the range, and then deer sized game, I'd definitely recommend the .308, purely based on price. The .243 and .270 make awesome range cartridges, and great hunting rounds as well, but are too expensive to just shoot around at the range.

If you're handloading, then that might change things. Until then, you really can't go wrong with the .308Win.

Handloading is the only way to go unless you are shooting a box or two a year. And yes with handloading there will only be a minor difference in cost between the cartridges -- essentially only the powder. Handloaded the .243 would be cheapest, 308 next, and 270 a bit more. However, we are probably talking a penny or two per shot.

Personally, if it were me, if I didn't need a .300Winnie, I wouldn't get one. Too much noise and recoil for what you're gonna do, in my opinion. If that don't bother you though...have at. Otherwise, if not handloading, Id recommend the .270, 270WSM, 25-06, 243, or the like. I think you can get any of those in the M700. The 25-06, IMO, would be the best all around of those for your purposes.

You really should get a sense of humor. And yes, I've won very many cases. In fact I win most of them. Why do you ask? I mean just curious seeing as how you weren't getting personal, and that has absolutely nothing to do with guns.

AH...Ive heard a lot about the old 77 not being a very good rifle. I am glad that I was one of the fortunate ones who got a good one. Its an M77R in 300WM. I have had it for about 30 years and it has dropped a lot of game. From pronghorn to big browns. She is getting like me, a bit old in the tooth but she still shoots sub MOA from a bench. I wish that I held up as well as she does.
