| I tried to find a way to use the 7.62x39mm for varmints.I was using mfg,d ammo with 123gr bullets. They seemed to make 200yds fairly good and then dive into the ground.I see the drop was,!00yd 0,-minus 25" at 300yds.That was a federal load. I also see a Fed. load that is fmj that only drops 14.6" at 300yds and a Win. SP load that has a 15.4" drop at 300yds when sighted in 0 at 200yds.I actually believe with good bullets and a custom barrel you could reach 1000yds,be accurate enough to hit a 20"bull and still have power enough to poke a hole through a paper target.I do not however believe the 7.62x39 would be much more efficient than a .30-30.Whatever you could do with one,you could pretty well do with the other, altho the 7.52 would have a little edge at longer range with spitzer bullets. It worked pretty good on woodchucks under 200yds. sam. |

I dunno. For most people here shooting and hitting your target at 200 meters with a .45 cal M1911A1 would be Christ like yet, I know a fella who can do it on demand. His name is Millard Butler and he is without question the WORLD's #1 Combat Pistol Shooter and has a Trophy named after him at the Winston P. Wilson Matches in Little Rock. So I know I could not do it and I know there are probably people on these threads that could, so I left it open under ACCOMPLISHED. ACTUALLY you are right, Millard is very Christ like when he shoots hand guns andhe is something to watch. Last edited by Wingwiper; 05-08-2008 at 07:55 AM. | |

| Senior Member | Christlike? Millard is aproaching handgun god status in my book. I have been practicing with my 45 at 100 yards and that isnt easy, I certainly dont have nice neat groups either. | Hmm as I recall the 7.62x39mm had a max effective range of 400m, and the 5.56mm of 460m. Now who here actually knows the definition of maximum effective range? As opposed to "maximum range"?

| will an AK shoot to 1000yds, yes. will it kill you if hit at 1000yds, yes. on the other hand, good luck hitting something with a rattletrap AK at that distance. |

| My AK is chambered in NATO 5.56, but I have never shot it longer than 200 yards, and 200 was doable. I was hitting human sized targets at 200 yards. |

Max Effective range = Max Killing Range (within Battle Zero or from from neck to waist) I don't remember whether it meant without dope being added, I am sure it had to be, because I seem to remember the M-14 as having a Max Effective Range of 700 Meters and the cyclic rate of fire was the same as the M60 750 to 800 rds per minute. been a very long time since I read my little Red Book as-hole to belly button.
