Remington 870

so i went and picked up an 870 with 28" barrel today. just wondering what type of choke would be best to shoot skeet? i havent really done to much bird hunting and havent had a shotgun for about 8 years so im not to sure what kind or type of choke would be best for skeet. also, is the 28" barrel good for skeet? id like to get a little bit shorter one, but i dont know the pros and cons to a short or long barrel?

i got the 870 with wood stock, but they had another 870 with black synthetic stock and it just didnt look as good as the wood did to me. they were the same price but the black one said Remington 870 Express Magnum on the side of it, not Supermag just Magnum. they both also take the same size shells to, either 2 3/4" or 3". Does anyone know the difference between the 2? i dont know if they are basically the same thing or not. after i got home i started thinking maybe i shoulda got the black Express Magnum instead, but i dunno if theres any benefit or difference to either of them. . . . .

Skeet is a fairly close game. Try Imp Cyl. (one of the three that come with the gun) you can buy a skeet choke seperately.

Wood will typically absorb felt recoil a bit better than synthetic stocks. Synthetic is more weather resistant.

Longer barrels give a longer sight plane and at times with results to vary a smoother swing.

That said, I will be proven wrong eventually.

Jerry hit the choke tube for skeet very well..
There are actually 2 different chokes for skeet, being Skeet 1 and Skeet 2.. Guess what's smack dab in between the two sizes?? IMP..

I like TruLock Tubes Trulock Chokes - choke tubes for mossberg, remington, winchester, beretta, benelli products, and other brands

You didn't mention whether or not your gun has the matte blue or a polished blue. The Express models have the matte blue, and to be honest I've not heard much good about it. External surface rust is the major concern with the Remington Express metal finish.

Now for a rundown on the Magnum vs Super Magnum. The Mag is a three inch gun whereas the Super Mag is a three and a half inch gun. Either can also use 2 3/4" or 3" interchangeably, but the Mag should not be used with 3 1/2". the biggest difference between the 2 3/4" and 3" is that the 3" allows a heavier shot charge, usually sacrificing velocity in the process. As for the 3 1/2", I have no experience with it and probably never will. Don't get me wrong, I do own a 3" 12g, it just sees limited use since my go to gun is a 2 1/2" 16 gauge.
