Not quite the same thing- A 22 has about 1/10th the kinetic energy of say a 270 (Ideal whitetail rifle). A 303 has about 1/2 the kinetic energy (conservatively) of something like a 375H&H (what I'm told is a good buffalo gun).
I appreciate the experienced advice of murphy, nathan and others, but the above is not really helpful.
As for buffalo being just big dumb cows... I wouldn't say it to their face.

Depends on how ya hunt'm. If ya see a Buff 150 yards away on open ground you can easily put 10 rounds in one. Now if yer creeping through the brush and come nose to nose maybe not.

Jimmy243,there are 3 words that may possibly help,Quickly,Cleanly,and Humanely.Others have suggested a bigger rifle for hunting Water Buffalo and I would tend to agree.No doubt a .22 rimfire would take down a Whitetail and a .303 a Water Buffalo, but are they the best choices?Will multiple shots be needed? Will you be able to get off multiple shots?Also add to the fact that if wounded this animal may try and run you over.I believe you stated your only choice was a .303 and IMO there are better choices in rifles.I could care less what you use but you ask for opinion and this is mine.

We have Bison Buffalo here and we are restricted to Magnum rifles shooting .30 Cal. 200 Grain bullets Minimum By Law...Even then you feel pretty Inadequate if a Large Bull charges you at 40 miles an hour, so we hunt in parties of 2-4 people... Even hitting a Vital spot does not mean that the animal will die Instantly as I have discovered on large dangerous game. They can take a lot more than us Humans Can !!!

There are people killed by buffalo every year. It would seem to me that hunting buffalo with a marginally powerful gun would be a good way to become a statistic. If you are hunting something that will try to kill you there is no such thing as too much gun as long as you can fire it accurately. I have never hunted these buffalo but if I were going to I would greatfully get all the advice I could from experienced hunters like Irish and Nathan 123 so that I could reasonably expect to come back from this hunt alive.

A LOT of misinformed opinion in this thread.Either that or a few shit stirrers/trolls looking for bites.If you want to come over and use a 303 on buff be my guest.And when you are on the news barly alive or dead i will laugh.A few comments on here are just plain stupid and made without any idea of what a buffalo in the australian top end is like.Hell why not go after the top end pigs with a 22magnum???Hey they couldnt be as tough as anything you have seen in the states.Bloody keyboard hunters.That isnt everyone in this thread,there was also some really smart comments.

.338 Win mag or .375 H&H at least, I don't understand why anyone would gamble with lesser cartridges, my gosh, is recoil THAT big of a deal? oh sure, you COULD kill anything in the world with a .22 Mag, but why the hell would you want to? if you are afraid of a little recoil, you shouldn't be hunting big animals at all, because big animals, coincidentally, require big guns!

Oh come on Irish, I've seen water buffalos up close in Viet Nam and Thailand, I've even stood right next to them, all a person needs as back up if their .303 doesn't work is a 7 year old boy with a stick to shoo them off until you reload, they're just glorified Jersey Maid cows for God's sake.

ive seen dairy cows destroy a 3/4ton truck in a hurry. i dont think i want to piss off a wild buffalo without a reasonably large rifle.

I've watched videos from Mark Sullivan "Africa's Black Death" where he guides, he uses a double rifle in the .700 Nitro Express. The Cape Buffalo is one mean and aggressive animal. The critter can take the punishment from these powerful guns and they will continuely charge. I think the bullet weight is 700 to 950 grains.
The bad guys uses the AK's to do their jobs on the game to get their ivory. 7.62 x 39 is somewhat close to a .30-.30 in performance. Go figure.
I saw a film where Fred Bear shot an Elepahant with his bow and arrow! I wonder what Elmer did in Africa??? just adding my 1.5 cents...
