Good gun for ground hogs in the open? - Page 2

I was discussing moles/prairie dogs/ ground hogs with my boss at work and he said "juicy fruit"

me: WHat?

boss: "juicy fruit. You buy a pack, take it home, put on some new latex gloves, and put a couple sticks in each hole. As long as your scent isn't on them, the groundhogs will eat them, and they'll die."

me: kool!

so try it and let me know if it works.

As I have stated before,I use everything,and consider handguns as the ultimate challenge.The one thing that always amazes me is,I can have a centerfire rifle that I can shoot 1/2 MOA and miss a woodchuck with it. sam.

Do you know anyone that has a dog that likes to "hunt"? If you got a dog near the holes before the hogs come out, then turned it loose, the hogs would go away, one by one.

I'm going to suggest a tent blind and shoot from it. They really work !!! My step father got one at his retirement party and he turkey and deer hunts with it.

In your case I would set it up and not hunt out of it for a few days until the dogs get use to it .

i dont like poisons either...i dont want my cats or dog getting into it, plus its much more fun to shoot it then to poison it.

Thinking about this for a while I am wondering if you can buy the Ruger .22 Charger. It is a pistol with the accuracy of a rifle. You could use some good 40 grain bullets.
It's not the best but in your case it might work.

A-Men to the tent blind. picked one up at wally world for $60. Set it up on the 8th and sat in it this morning. I got six Ground Hogs by noon. all with a 20ga slug gun. I never thought these things worked that well. Most of my shots were 25-50 yds. the only problem was 20ga buckhammer vs 10lb g-hog = alot of red spots on the sod.

I'm putting 5 .45-70s in 4.5 inchs at 300 yards, so that baby is going "chucking" in the morning. I only got one with it last year, a too easy 65 yard shot. Totally cleared its mind. It is a NEF Handi Rifle, as are 6 other of my rifles, and all shoot better than I can. I have a 300 yard gong target and I ring it every shot with a Handi .357. It is also a very nice little wood chuck gun.

I have one pistol in mind that will reach out that far and be more accurate than your slug gun, and its the fnh 5.7x28mm. I shoot mine at a hundred yards all the time, but its usualy at small stumps about a foot wide. If you got a wrap around mount with optic 150 yards shouldnt be a problem. Oh yeah another gun comes to mind as well, the ruger charger 10-22. A hundred and fifty yards is pushing the 22lr cartridge but hey what the hell. The ruger 10-22 has a nice rail on it which can hold a number of optics, and comes with a bipod making long shots very easy. I paid $299.00 for mine which is a fraction of what a 5.7 x 28mm costs, and dont get me started on ammo costs.

If you can hit anything besides your house at 150 with a pistol you're one hell of a shot whoever you are. A groundhog poking his head out at 150 yards with a handgun? Well, even a blind dog finds a bone once in a while but I'd feel pretty safe being the groundhog.

You gotta get closer my man. +1 to the blind idea. On the other hand I'll bet that artillery shot was satisfying!

I know a guy who uses Juicy Fruit on moles and gophers and swears by it. Don't know about ground hogs.
