AK's 7.62x39 and 7.62 NATO - Page 2

okay, here's what happened to some guys I know. They had a bolt rifle in the 7.62 x 54R. Guess what? They went to Wally world and got some 7.62 NATO=7.62 x 51 [no rim] They shot and could not get the rounds out unless they used a ram rod. Close fit except for the extraction.
Know what you have! It could be a big handful if things go bad instead of bang.

They are lucky they still have a face. As far as 7.62 NATO (7.62x51) and .308 go, you shouldn't have any problems shooting the 7.62 NATO in a .308 gun, as 7.62 pressures are listed slightly lower than .308. It apparently isn't reccomended shooting a .308 in a 7.62 rifle, but I don't have any problems.

I had a Saiga 308 it would not shoot 7.62 surplus ammo for caca. Chambered them ok just couldn't hit any thing. Shot 308s great.

My Dept had 3 Rem 700s in 308, they were tight when chambering surplu ammo.

Here's what I found out. Military chambers are "sloppier" than "civilian" chambers. The lead in to the rifling on military rifles is longer than civilian rifles. So you can shoot 308 ammo in a 7.62 Rifle, but you could have a problem shooting 7.62 ammo in a 308 civilian rifle especially if your civilian rifle has a tight chamber the 7.62 may be a tad too long and you'll get high pressures. The same goes for 223 as opposed to 5.56X45.

My M1A and AR-10 don't shoot 308 for caca even match 308 They both shoot 7.62 great, in fact the chambers are identical and I reload them to the same OAL and trim to the same length The AR Likes 3031 the M!A likes 748. My Colt Match Target shoots military ammo just fine with the 1in7 twist with a 5.56X45 chamber it likes the 62 grain ss107 ammo best

Barrels were made for the pressures associated with the caliber that they were made for. This is why you can shoot .38 Spl through a .357 Magnum, but not .357 Magnum through a .38 Spl... well, excluding the fact that the .357 cartridges are longer and wouldn't fit in a cylinder designed for .38 Spl rounds.

The 7.62X51mm NATO (no action talk only) would chamber in some of the old Russian guns chambered in 7.62X54R and the 81mm morter rounds will work in the soviet 82mm tube. That's where these rumors probably started.

On the history channel, I saw a guy who's suppossed to be a former Navy SEAL say the AK47 uses the 7.62mm NATO round, holding the round next to the 5.56.

Maybe he was told that an AK-74 will fire a 5.45x39mm...which would be correct

I went to a Walmart local here asking for 8mm Mauser. But I asked for it as 7.95 x 57 and she was like WTF so I said 8mm Mauser and she was still like WTF so I said WTF and said forget it.

The dangerous thimg is that often a more powerful round will fit in some less powerful guns.
Lots of older .38 spl revolvers will chamber a .357 mag.
A .38-55 will chamber a .375 W-W.
Some, claw type extractor, rifles that have use .30-06 head will actually fire
a round based on that case. You might shoot a .243 in a .308 or a .308 in a .30-06.

The results are not good.
