| Using the wheat you store...
My wife and I have been doing some research on affordable/efficient wheat mills, so we can grind and use the wheat we've stored...instead of just using the hand mill (Little Ark) we purchased earlier. We've narrowed our search down to two mills: NutriMill and WonderMill, and WonderMill seems to be the better mill...with their large motor (1.75 hp), UL listing (only mill of its type to have such) and their design to control flour dust during grinding. I didn't browse the sites, I just wondered if any of'm have a mechanical crank in case there's no electricity?

Yes, or they work well using a small generator. 10 minutes on the generator will grind enough flour for a week or more. We do have a manual grinder for such situations (http://survivalacres.com/information/ark-info.htm), and will use it to grind cracked wheat...and plan to use the generator when power is down. We also have several #10 cans of wheat flour for emergency use.

Believe it or not I grind wheat. But my electirc grinder is so old I don't know who made it. I'll have to look. I bought it at a yard sale. I but wheat by the 50lb sack. The wonder mill looks nice.

Kaaa... Here's where we bought our flour in #10 cans, along with other medium and long-term food storage items: NEW: Home Storage Center Order Form Quality of items they offer is very good... ----- As for the grain mill choice, we studied up on all the available units and WonderMill won. We're looking forward to receiving it soon and enjoying freshly baked bread using freshly ground flour.

Grain Germ "oil's" spoil the flower after a bit if isant used right off. Look at the store flower and they will say from degerminated grains for better shelf life. |

Mitch... Thanks for info on Heinsohn's Country Store. I ordered their catalog this afternoon and look forward to buying some items from them. Our Little Ark hand crank grinder, with stone and burr plates, looks/works like their "grain grinder" model. It's a handy item to have/use in a power outage. We'll use our WonderMill while electricity is up, and then with the generator when it's down...unless it's down for awhile, and our storage flour is depleted, and out will come the Little Ark grinder. We too are looking forward to grinding corn, and making our own Mexican foods items. We've been watching the market place for a sturdy tortilla press. Rex... Yes, it's a lot healthier to use freshly ground flour...so you get all the grain germ in your diet. We use oxygen absorber packets in our #10 cans of storage flour, so oxygen doesn't break down the germ oil as quickly and the germ stays fresher in a storage condition.

Fresh ground germ flower will keep on the shelf a couple months before turning stale the nutrents start to degrade as the oil's turn sour, freezing will hold it for 3-4 months .

Rex... Thanks for info on freezing grain flour, to help preserve the germ. We plan on doing that with some flour for storage purposes.
