Best Remington rifle in .223 caliber

I have 2 Remington big game rifles, 7mm-08 and a custom .338 federal, and would like one in .223 for spending quality time at the bench. Cheap ammo, low recoil, etc. This would allow me to spend more time and less money at the range. Might also use the gun for the occasional coyote hunt. Your thoughts on the best .223 Remington for such use.

You can't go wrong with any of the 700's. VS, VSSF, etc. Excellent out of the box, adjustable trigger and a wide selection of finishes and furniture. Just my .02

I'd love one of those xr100s. I saw one in a store once. It was nice to hold. Heard great things about it. Like half MOA and smaller groups. Like $800ish. Single shot though, so I guess it would suck for yote hunting (but I've never been so I don't really know how that goes). Remington Model XR-100™ Rangemaster

Remington makes a few great rifles in .223:

The R-15 listed above is a good rifle also, but it's just an AR-15 type rifle, and you could probably find another brand that is cheaper.

Any of the remington's are great. I have a 22-250 in a 700 vls that is wonderful. But my favorite tinker rifle is a Howa 1500 Ultimate Varmiter in 223. I shoot it at least weekly off my bench at 300 yards with handloads that will hold 1 1/4" group at that distance. It will even stay under 2" with cheap wolf bullets. What more can you ask for in an out-of-the-box rifle. My only complaint was the trigger, I replaced it with a Timney. Plus, you can buy the rifle, trigger, and a decent scope for the price of an upper level remington 700.

I have a .223 in an LVSF. Trigger is adjusted to 2 lb, it handles well, and is a shooter. I am not one who can brag on how good of a shot I am, but on the bench I can cover 3 shots with a nickle with this gun. I'm shooting 40 gr V-Max (Black Hills) and am just tickled with this one.

Having owned three Remingtons in .223 - 700VLS , 700LTR and 700SPS Varmint - all three have displayed exceptional accuracy. The VLS and SPS Varmint are 1 in 12" twists which shoot up to 55 grain or so very well , the 1 in 9" twist 700 LTR allow the use of bullets in the 69 grain range with remarkable accuracy in the case of 69 Sierra MatchKings.

No longer have the VLS but still have the LTR and SPS. I regrettably traded the VLS a few years ago on a 700P in .308. Decided that was not a wise move and went back to the .223 and that is when I picked up the 20" LTR .223 which has been my most accurate rifle ever.

The SPS Tactical might be one you want to look at - it is a 20" like the LTR and has the 1 in 9" twist and a Hogue stock. My 26" SPS Varmint is installed in a HS Precision stock and is a great shooter.

Basically any of the heavy barrel tactical/varmint/target series from Remington shoot be a great range gun for you and well equipped for occasional coyote work.

The 700 has a rich history and is a favored gun for accuracy with military and police. I'm more familiar with heavier caliber rifles, but the 700 in .223 would be hard to beat.

The R-15 is Remington's entry in the AR-15 class. It would be a fun plinker, but I doubt it having the accuracy of a 700. Then you have to ask yourself, how accurate do you want to be?

I have a .223 in SPS Varmint with a B&C fully bedded stock and the total was somewhere around $650 new. That and it shoots damn good.

I have the Remington XR100 Rangemaster (but in .22-250) and let me tell you it is a wonderful rifle, easily the most accurate rifle I own. Being a single-shot might be a drawback for some and not ideal for hunting except it is VERY easy
and fast to load a shell. The shells eject superbly and easily so with a little practice and shells in your vest I think you could hunt 'yotes just fine with it. If you are shooting on a rest or a bipod the thing is so darn accurate that a shot to the kill zone from 300 yards really is child's play. Shooting freehand is a little tougher as it has a heavy barrel, but very nicely balanced. The thumbhole stock feels like a glove. I think it was $819 from Bass Pro Shops.
