I haven't seen too many 99s around these parts in Arizona. However, I did pull one down off the rack at Prescott Valley Guns about two weeks ago. It was in pretty sad shape though and they still wanted almost $225 for it.

Being a non-chromed barrel that, too, looked in questionable shape.

I don't know the story behind the 99s as far as how many were ever imported, or if they were ever imported at all or were just bring-home/captured weapons of WWII.

BTW, it's readily believed the later made Arisakas of the 1939-1945 period are generally considered unsafe to fire. It seems that when the Japanese were trying to push out mass guns and products near the end of the war, and when coal was scarce from China, they compromised on the metalurgy quality.

If I were considering adding one to my collection it would likely be for wall hanging. But, that's your decision.

KEEP LOOKING

I HAVE OVER 50 JAPS AND STILL ADD TO THEM ON OCCASION. JUST KEEP LOOKING IN THE GUN SHOPS AND SHOWS AND YOU WILL FIND WHAT YOU WANT. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS WHEN YOU FIND ONE THEY WILL TURN UP ALL OVER THE PLACE. HAVE FUN AND ENJOY. JAPS ARE JUST AS HABIT FORMING AS ANY OTHERS.

my advice is stay away from the online auctions. the whole scam is nutz IMO. deal with gun shops, pawn shops, gun shows, and those online dealers that back up their products.

Cool IT"S.......................................

the 1945 arisakas that were suspect, the last ditch made guns, the ones with no buttplate, and the cocking piece held on with welds, and very rudimentary sights, are the nonshooters, also there are training rifles that were only meant for special blank cartridges, wall hangers.

the Arisaka action is one of the strongest made, and a good one in good shape is shootable. numbers have been converted to sporting rifles of various calibers.

after 1945 MacArthur had bunches of them converted to .30m2 ballto give China Korea in their anti-communist efforts. Mexico bought bunches in the 1920's in 7mm Mauser, these are rare to find in any condition

HI, AGAIN, DANA,
AN OLD FRIEND GAVE ME A JAP ARISAKA MODEL 99 IN 7.7, THAT HE HAD BROUGHT HOME FROM HIS SERVICE IN THE MARINES IN THE FAR EAST, IT IS IN GOOD SHAPE, UNDER ALL THE RUST, AND THE BORE IS FINE, BUT THE BOLT IS MISSING THE FIRING PIN, SPRING, AND ALSO THE REAR KNURLED CAP, ANY IDEA WHERE I COULD FIND THESE PARTS, OTHER THAN NUMRICH ARMS? (THEY HAVE COMPLETE BOLTS FOR ABOUT $50.+,AND THE INDIVIDUAL PARTS I NEED COSTING ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT. MANY PARTS DEALERS I HAVE CONTACTED, ALL SAY THE SAME THING, THOSE ARE THE PARTS EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR! SINCE YOU HAVE SO MANY JAP RIFLES, I THOUGHT YOU'D BE WELL AWARE OF WHERE TO GET THE PARTS AT THE BEST PRICES.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME,
FRED (HONCHO) HONCHO@OUTDRS.NET

DANA
QUESTION ON MODEL 99 ARISAKAS
HI AGAIN, DANA,
A SHOOTING/COLLECTING FRIEND OF MINE GOT ME A JAP MODEL 99 FOR ONLY $20., IN GOOD SHAPE, BUT MISSING THE BOLT, FOLLOWER, FOLLOWER SPRING, BUTT PLATE, AND A FEW MINOR SCREWS, BUT I'M CURIOUS ABOUT THIS ONE-- IT WAS MADE AT THE KOGYO ARSENAL, BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY SERIES SYMBOL ON IT. THE ONLY OTHER MARKING ON IT IS THE SERIAL NUMBER, AND THE "MUM" IS GROUND OFF. THE FURNITURE IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE, FAR BETTER THAN MY OTHER TWO MODEL 99S, BUT IT HAS NO UPPER HAND GUARD, AND HAS A FIXED PEEP SIGHT. THE BORE IS EXCELLENT, DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FIRED MUCH, IF AT ALL-- DOES THIS MEAN IT IS ONE OF THE "LAST DITCH" PIECES? I REMEMBER READING SOMEWHERE THAT THE LAST ONES THEY MADE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE BUTTPLATES, (EVEN THO THIS ONE HAS SCREW HOLES), IT IS NOT INLETTED ON THE TOP OF THE BUTTSTOCK, FOR THE BUTTPLATE. I ALSO REMEMBER READING THAT THESE MAY BE DANGEROUS TO FIRE,BECAUSE THE RECEIVERS WERE WEAK-- CAN YOU SHED ANY LIGHT ON THIS,OR DIRECT ME TO A SITE THAT HAS INFO ON THEM? I'D BE MUCH OBLIGED!
CHEERS,
FRED WAHL

FRED WAHL WROTE:
Dale, do you have any access to sites or info on how to identify the late war model 99s, I just got one cheap which I think is a "last ditcher", and don't know if I want to shoot it, in view of your comments on the weak receivers-- don't know how to date this one, either, there's no series symbol on it, just the 'Mum, Kogyo arsenal, and the serial number. Would be grateful for a response!
Cheers,
Fred

I can't recall where I first heard about the Arisakas but I did find this site that pretty much reiterates what I wrote.

This site, however, is somewhat contradictory in that it first talks about the Arisakas having one of the sturdiest receivers then it goes on to speak about the metal problems with older Arisakas.

Hope it's some help.

CAN'T ADD MUCH TO WHAT YOU HAVE SAID OR BEEN TOLD. THE MISSING BUT PLATE WAS A WOODEN PLATE THAT WAS FLUSH WITH THE STOCK. FRED HONEYCUTT JR LISTS "PRIVATE COMPANY UNDER KOKURA ARSENEL SUPERVISION. MANUFACTURED TYPE 99 RIFLES DURING THE 1940-1945 PERIOD SYMBOLS REPORTEDLY SIGNIFY TOKYO JUKI KOGYO (TOKYO RIFLE MANUFACTURING CO.) LOCATED IN TOKYO."

BEST

Dana,

I'm not implying Arisakas are not good weapons.

I'm just reporting what I've heard and read about the late WW2 weapons....much like the Springfield 1903s.

I HAVE ALL TYPES OF JAPS BUT DON'T FIRE ANY OF THEM. SOME MODS ARE WELL DONE AND THE LAST DITCH LOOK JUST LIKE YOU WOULD EXPECT. BUT THE MAUSER LAST DITCH ARE EVEN WORSE???? IN GENERAL THE RUN OF THE MILL JAPS ARE GOOD MILITARY FIREARMS. ( FOR THEM ) OFF HAND I HAVE 30,36,38.44,97,99,TYPE TWO PARA. BUT MOST OF THE TIME I SUFFER FORM CRS.
