M&P 9mm Pro Series

For those that have yet to purchase an M&P, or for us that have one and are looking for an excuse to buy another:

Product: Smith & Wesson M&P9 Pro Series

The 5" 9mm M&P should be available later on this year. Can't wait

Looks great! I'd like to have one in the .45ACP though.

Have you heard about the 2 new M&P45's due out in a few months?

Yeah, I heard

I'd like to get a .45 in the future, and I'm sure one of the 3 M&P-45's will fit the bill.

Hello Everybody, I am new to this forum and am eagerly awaiting any new news about the wonderful new handgun i recently bought. I purchased a new 9mm smith and wesson m&p series , full size with the optional , trijicon' night sights. I must say I did alot of homework and wrestled my thoughts of purchase between the 'smith' 9 and a 'glock' 17 9mm. After making my decision and after firing both, i can't say enough about the s&W mp 9mm. It is by far the nicest, badass... easy to shoot ..get back on target 9mm I have ever shot..HANDS DOWN!!! I have put over 2000 rounds of just about every ammo out there....with only one hitch...and that was due to my lack of re-setting the trigger. This is truelly and awesome firearm... and with my licence to carry concealed...will carry it proudly ...and most importantly with CONFIDENDENCE! I am not anti- glock..almost bought one ...but choose the fit and feel of the 'smith' and also wanted to 'Keep it Made in the U.S.A !! Glocks have a proven track record ...I cannot diss-agree....however...I think S&W has come up with a true winner and hopefully ...others out there...over time will find out the same !!Proud to be an American....Proud to buy American...proud to die an American..!! I was torn too but between the M&P, Glock and Springfield XD but in .40 S&W. I gave Glock the credit it's due and still agree it's a great gun but I preferred the M&P and Springfield. Went back again and rented the two of them but chose the Springfield. They were 3 great guns and a tough choice to make. So far I am very happy with my Springfield. Keep us posted on your M&P. Going to be buying a new 9MM soon and will have to test all 3 in that caliber.

Gary M , Just in case you didn't know, Smith and Wesson is offering a rebate right now, but it end's shortly ..May 15 thru August 15 2008. $30 dollars off any m/p or sigma pistol OR 2 FREE extra magazines. Pretty damn good offer if you ask me....I definatly took the 2 x-tra mags. It's a mail in rebate....and Iv'e been reading that they are backed up with shipping them out.....but people have been getting them...just taking a-while. Apparently up to three month's in some areas. SO...you may want to do some checking at your local gun shop for the details...and comence on your testing of the 9mm of your next choice for purchase. I absolutly LOVE mine. I got a pretty good deal on it too. 460.00 without night-sights...roughly 555.00 with.....tax incl. I got mine "with'..being that they are good up to about 12 plus years so they say...and of course the gun itself has a lifetime guarentee. I definately recomend an upula loader...because trying to fill the 17 round mags can become VERY tedious..and they only run about 35.00 and ...personaly.....are a hand-finger life-saver !!! I too am from Florida...Cocoa Beach area...good luck and keep posted on your next purchase! Keep'em straight and in the middle.....'two too the body....one too the head'....Racer-X

S&W will make good one their rebate, but some people report it taking up to 3 months to get their check, their mags, or both.

Racerx, glad to have another M&P fan aboard. I bought my M&P 9mm fullsize last december, and it may be the best firearm that I have ever purchased. I have about 1500 rounds through it thus far, and it hasn't had a single hiccup.

When I bought it, I got a pretty good deal. $450 + $50 rebate + 2 free magazines. I think S&W had to reduce the rebate because of the high number of M&P handguns being sold.

Gary M, your XD won't let you down. I, like you, was very torn between the XD and M&P . The M&P had me sold with it's lower price and removable back straps. It also felt better in my hand, but that's definitely a matter of opinion.

The 17 round mags are somewhat hard to fill completely, although I always manage to fill them. When at the range, I load 10 rounds in to the mags to save my thumbs, but if I were to carry, I wouldn't have a problem getting 17 rounds in.

Gary, keep us updated with your 9mm choice.

Racerx, welcome to G&G and welcome to the wonderful world of M&P handgun shooting

Bravo, Thanks for having the 'welcome mat' out for newcomers, such as myself. I've been reading and watching many different web-sites etc... and I must say there's alot of "bull" out there. Thank-you for your re-ply , I respect your knowledge and in-sight as too the 'firearms' available to all that wish to purchase and "depend" on . I hope you continue to post all and or any pertinent info' to all us newbies'' lol...it is nice to have someone with more knowledge to gain access to and learn from !! I can't say enough good things about the S&W M&P 9 mm that I purchased.!!! I have now put over 3000 rounds through it and still....NO PROBLEMS>>>MISSFIRES >>>JAMS>>>FAILURE TO FEED>>>NOTHING!!!!!..I do of course..clean it faithfully!!I couldn't be happier!! Iv'e only owned it for 2 month's!! SO...i'm putting almost 500 rds a week..I must say that the 'UPULA" loader is gonna make my wallet light with the EEZZ of loading the mag's....however if you like to hit the range as I do ....it's indispensible" .I recomend the loader along with the gun....because the gun's so good...you just don't wanna stop shooting !!! I did drop a "DPM" recoil-reduction spring in mine though it didn't really need it,it's just a '9'... been changing springs verses ammo grain and brand to see which works/feels best for practice. Nothing but Cor-Bon or Federal Hydra-shocks for self defense though !! DPM..working great... Kinda like putting a hoodscoop on a new corvette....just wanted it to be as 'smooth and badass as it could be!! Thanx again for making me feel welcome...look forward to any and all of your future posts. I also own a Kel-tec 380...along with some others ,good gun but not a fun gun to shoot..Only has one purpose.....in the pocket last resort !!! Any thoughts as to making "IT" better? Or is it just as I wrote...a paperweight with a trigger!! Don't get me wrong ...it's alway's fired....just very hard on the hands..not a fun target ;plinker or anything close to fun. Thanx again...Racer X"to live is to learn....to learn is to live......do both and you'll be alright' !! rock-on !!

Is the pro 9 any more accurate than the M&P 9?

Lefthanded, You know....that's a good question...and to be honest...I don't know? Iv'e been trying to find that out myself. I'm going to a gun-show in Melbourne Florida tommorrow so I'm going to try and find out. I'de like to know for myself also...being as I just purchased mine and would have liked to know that a "Pro" version was available before I bought my .." regular" full-size model. I THINK ?..that the pro might have a slightly longer barrel...at which point ...yes...that would probably make it more accurate. But...i feel as though that would only be useful for more of a competitive shooting type of person..which is great if that's what you want. I hope that-that is the only difference...because if not I may have been interested in a "Pro" model depending upon "what " those other features may be. I will try to find out tommorrow if I make it to the show and if so I will make a post. If you happen to find the answer before hand please do the same and post it. By the way I'm a "Lefty" too!!! Rock -On......Anyway ...IT"S A GREAT GUN>>> I can't say enough good things about it !!! very easy to switch magazine disconect over to the right side of the pistol for a lefty.. S&W thought about guy's like us when they made this model....3000 plus rounds without a single problem !!! NONE !! I haven't even had a bad round that didn't fire....that say's alot about the gun and or the quality of the ammo Iv'e put through it .1000 rds were reloads....bought at a dicount ammo company....proffesional....but they were still reloads and all of them fired through the S&W m/p 9 !!!! Awesome!!!! good luck......and again I'll try and find out the answer to our question about the "Pro" ???? model. Racer-x

Well Everyone....I went to the gunshow today in Melbourne Florida and I must say that there were quite a few people there and alot of nice vintage and new firearms. However...to get to the point as to the question of the "PRO"- model S&W M&P pistol the answer i got from one dealer was..... a longer barrel...I asked if that was it and he basicaly ....turned and walked away. Mind you...the place was busy..but he was not...and....I was even acting as though I was interested in purchasing a pistol...now maybe he 'walked' because I noticed he did'nt have a "pro" model demo-ed or available..but it seemed more like he was just an asshole..or didn't know his own products either. Anyway ...I'm certainly glad that I wasn't interested in anything he had because he was asking way more than what i had paid for mine....and he was also just a 'private vender" not a wholesale store or gunshop that would have any guarentee or warrenty OR CUSTOMER SERVICE !! I don't think this guy was going to be getting rich anytime in the near future in the selling of firearms!! I am die-ing to know if there are other substancial difference's and I know the easyestway to do this is simply by calling the store where I bought mine. They were a great bunch of guy's and I know I'll get a good solid answer from them on Tuseday. They are closed SUnday's and Monday's...Anyway ..for anyone interested the store is ( B and H GUN RACK) Merritt Island, Florida, phone (321)452-1105. They have a web site if you simply search for it by thier name. They don't or can't list thier prices because they are often BELOW retail. THEY DO HAVE EXCELLENT PRICES!! Lowest Iv'e seen anywhere !!! I'm just lucky I live close by. They supply most of the police agencies in the area. Unless your in law enforcement you can't see there prices online because of thier password set-up...however they will give you a quote over the phone if you call about an item your interested in...and ....they've got ALOT!! The only other store Iv'e found comparable was called "Bud's" gun shop. Again ..easy to find with a quick on-line seach. You'd be suprised at the difference in prices from on state to another....sometimes it can be HUGE!! Often worth the added price of shipping and then some...plus if your good you can even haggle a little..and they'll drop the price even more which then in turn covers the shipping !!!! Anyway sorry I could'nt get the answer today...but i'll make a post on Tuesday and get to the bottom of this.. good -luck Keep-shooting !!! Racer-X............p.s. I put another 200 rds through my mp 9 today without a hitch....Absolutly the best firearm Iv'e owned to-date !!! Cleaned it......and got yelled at by my ole' lady for " stareing and addmireing it too much".... If there was hair around the opening in the handle where the magazine goes in......well............I don't think I need to say anymore....heheheheh

Then.....melt down all the plastic and make one " great big black "Bigwheel" out of them!!!!.......lol......Just kidding buddy...Glock's are great gun's I'm sure if you post them there will be a buyer for them out there somewhere!!! How many and what make/ model are they all ??....condition etc.....the place I listed earlier B and H gunrack buy's, sells, trades....Post them !!! I'll be looking out or should i say into it for ya !..Racer-X

Heh, yeah JMax, it should be easy enough to sell the Glocks, there is still a market out there for them. But I agree, I would definitely replace Glocks with the M&P if I had the choice.

Racerx, the difference between the M&P Fullsize and the M&P Pro is the barrel length, and that's about it. The added weight of the slide should in theory reduce recoil, but since the bullet is reaching higher velocities, it sort of offsets that. The outcome: The M&P Pro is heavier, but more accurate. The higher accuracy comes from the longer barrel, but namely from the longer distance between front and rear sight.

The lower part of the handgun (the plastic part that has the trigger and holds the magazine) seems to be nearly identical. I'm almost wondering if you could drop in an M&P pro slide...that would be cool. It must be a little different though, since I would imagine balance issues would arise.

EDIT: I looked at them again, and I really think that the lower is the same... I'm going to have to contact S&W. If I could get a M&P Pro upper for a few hundred bucks, it would definitely be worth it.

I finished shooting my M&P today and it is nicer than my Glocks. I have large hands and get Glock tracks rather quickly, no problem with the M&P. I will keep the G;locks but they will be shot less as I can shoot cast in the Smith. It really is a superior pistol design.

The M&P is a great gun in any size or caliber. I have a 9MM and a .45. Not too big on Glocks myself but we all have our own opinions. The only caution I would point out on the M&P is directed to anyone who has children in the house. The M&P either has no safety or a very minimal safety. No matter how many safeties a gun has beware around kids but take extra caution with this one. Invest in a good cable lock or trigger lock. Better yet buy both. I've never seen a gun that is too safe.

The same goes for Glocks and the Springfield XD. Safety's don't stop kids from hurting themselves. Good instruction and gun safes/locks will.

The M&P-45 has a thumb safety. The 9mm/.40S&W/.357Sig have trigger safeties (as does the .45), which means that the gun cannot fire unless the trigger is depressed.

I wouldn't mind seeing a thumb safety for other calibers, although I've become used to my M&P-9 not having a safety.

I agree about the current crop of safe devices being adequate. My own personal desire relates to my right thumb being 1911 trained, it needs something to do & a consistent resting spot. Partly why Iv'e been looking at a SR9, CZ75, & a couple of others. A thumb safety on a M&P in 9mm would possibly put me over the edge on the decision.
