| 9carbine,better choice than pump 12, for home defense. Those who favor the shotgun, over the 223 autoloader or a real pistol, are those who lack the skill to make the latter 2 arms do what they can. For such uninvolved shooters, the "tameness", and low cost, indoor range practice potential of the $300(used) 9mm Marlin camp gun make it the more effective gun. Load it with 90 gr Cor bon jhp's, 1700 fps in a carbine barrel, real expansion, and 600 ft lbs, more power than the much vaunted 357 revolver, 4" barrel and 125 gr jhp. For overpenetration worries, there is the SWAT Mag Safe 9mm load. Practice with a used, $80 .22 autorifle really DOES equal skill with the 9mm carbine, and 12 ga is NOT welcome at many indoor ranges. Fire it inside a small room, and you will likely nearly drop the gun (without ear muffs) The flash is horrible at night, too. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | The Camp Carbines aren't very rugged or reliable, by many reports. I had one, sold it. I may look into a MAC carbine, or if I wanna get fancy, a Ruger. But man, quit dissin mah shotguns, foo! They have many advantages for home defense.

| Senior Member ![]() | I like my PC9 Ruger carbine for the above reasons, quiet, little recoil, practice on pistol range, but if it really ever hit the fan like gangbusters my Winchester 1300 loaded with S&B 00 will come out!:assult: :assult:

| Senior Member | My two cents are this: Though you may be a super shot with a pistol, and you may be able to make washers out of beer caps with your .223, if you are anything like me, I don't wake up in the middle of the night jump to a good weaver stance and take aim on my bedroom door. I prefer to be able to roll off the side on to the floor and grab my shot-gun.

| Senior Member | I agree with jarcp, and I prefer a shotgun over any other gun for home defense. If you think the 870 in 12 ga. is too loud, too much flash or too much penetration; well, they make 'em in 20 ga. too. At 15 feet no bad guy will ever feel the difference. |

| Member | You might look at the Keltec Sub 2000. I chose 9mm, with Beretta mags(I have a 92SF), good for working nights. Also available in 40 S&W. Discreet to and from the truck(it folds), accurate to 100 yds, affordable. I keep a 45 for the house with frangible ammo, but this is great for travel. You can also get S&W or glock mag compatibility. |

| in the first place, who says you will be asleep, or in your home? you are 4x as likely to be attacked while away from home. You are most unlikely to get to any longarm in time, except by pure luck. You wont get to a pistol, either, except by luck, unless you wear it, and sleepwith it within arm's reach. I have many times been startled out of sleep by something, always managed to be as bright as ever, but then, my adrenal glands are probably bigger than my kidneys. Before a big match, I am so 'shook" that I need to go puke before shooting. |

| u've never been in top 10 at national or world matches, either. I"ve been the only guy in the top 20 who actually had to work for a living, several times, at high speed pistol stuff. |

| u'll NEVER come CLOSE to those times with full power .44 mags, from a revolver. I dont care if you fire 100,000 rds a year, have Smith paying for it. It's like running a 3 minute mile, it will NEVER be done. good reason to FORGET about the .44. most of the time, what MATTERS is the type of ammo used, and the time to switch to another target. There's 9x19 loads that are at LEAST as likey to suffice as the .44 mag swc, for instance. Like a 3 segment prefrag, 50 grs, 2200 fps, 5" barrel. That's 530 ft lbs, NONE of it overpenetrates, THREE wound tracks, and high enough velocity that the temporary gas cavity is capable of damaging chest organs. The .44 swc WASTES at least a third of its 800 or so ft lbs, on over-penetration. The reason I know the .44 mag penetration firsthand is because I shoot holes in my ceiling for fun. The .44swc penetrates right through! Nothing like sitting in front of the tv and shooting up in the air. |
