Security Six?

I've been doing some more research, and I've heard that an old Ruger Security Six might be a pretty good low-cost pistol. Does anyone here have any experience with this gun?

They're not bad at all. Ruger makes a quality product at an affordable price.......a Ruger GP100 used might be a little more sturdy and not very high in cost also.

Thumbs up

I've still got the 4" Security Six I bought years ago when I was working security - 4" barreled revolver was mandatory, loaded with .38's. Mine is blued, with hand-made custom grips that fit my hand well. Accuracy is very good, and the trigger apparently has been worked on - it's light and crisp. The only glitch is that it seems picky about being clean. After several cylinders-full, it starts getting sticky. I paid $250 for it, and feel well satisfied with it.

I got 6" SS Security Six last fall for $215. It was a LE's house gun to match his carry gun. It's a joy to shoot. Accuracy is pretty good and kick is moderate. I also noticed the action is very crisp. In SA, it is very lite. In DA, there is a nice hesitation right before it breaks and it's almost like shooting SA once you get used to it.

Also, my girlfriend who won't shoot my 9mm loves the security six. If I had the cash, I might get a 4" GP100, but as a poor college student, I got a superb gun for the price

I've had a 6" security six for years. Many thousands of round through it. I use it as a training pistol since I'm an NRA instructor and find it as reliable as anything else I've ever used. I also hunt with it. You can't go wrong with one in decent shape.

I bought a 6" stainless Security-Six almost twenty years ago. I've found it to be accurate, reliable and as solid as a rock.

I'm a big fan of the K-frame S&W guns, but for the .357 magnum loads I've always liked the Security-Six. I seldom shoot any really heavy loads and never saw the need to move up to a GP100.

One thing, though. If you buy the gun, get a new pair of stocks. The original wood is too small, IMHO. We used to joke that Bill Ruger made a great revolver, but he is still working on his first tree.

True true. Mine came with both the factory wood and Pachmyhr grips. I tried both and since then the wood ones have have been sitting in a box with all my other seldom used crap. Just keeping them in case I ever want to sell it.

The Ruger Security Six is a fine revolver. I have owned a 2 3/4", 4", and a 6". They all are accurate and perform very well. Extremely safe and reliable without too much weight.

My buddy bought a used 4" .357 Police-Service Six (same frame as a Security Six). I have to say that it was a good deal at $250, since S&W has never offered a directly comparable product. The S&W L frame would be the closest thing, but they are too new to be found at these kind of prices. I am not a big Ruger fan, but they make a more rugged .357 Magnum than S&W does.

If you are willing to go to a .38 Special, there are some fantastic deals on used S&W K frames these days. Model 10s (Military & Police) start at @$150. You can get Model 10s and 64s (stainless version) in first-rate condition starting at @$200.

The S&W .357 Magnum K frames, such as the Model 19 or 66, are not as durable as a Ruger, unless limited to 158gr Magnum loads. Good specimens tend to be a little cheaper than a Ruger, since they have been made in gigantic quantities.
