| My buddy bought a used 4" .357 Police-Service Six (same frame as a Security Six). I have to say that it was a good deal at $250, since S&W has never offered a directly comparable product. The S&W L frame would be the closest thing, but they are too new to be found at these kind of prices. I am not a big Ruger fan, but they make a more rugged .357 Magnum than S&W does.
If you are willing to go to a .38 Special, there are some fantastic deals on used S&W K frames these days. Model 10s (Military & Police) start at @$150. You can get Model 10s and 64s (stainless version) in first-rate condition starting at @$200.
The S&W .357 Magnum K frames, such as the Model 19 or 66, are not as durable as a Ruger, unless limited to 158gr Magnum loads. Good specimens tend to be a little cheaper than a Ruger, since they have been made in gigantic quantities.
