Sorry Bud, the only .223 I have is a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle that I've always been meaning to throw a good scope on and zap some groundhogs with. I know thats not the best choice, but thats all I got in .223 at the moment. You should be able to find something you want out there. Give www.gunbroker.com a cruise in the modern section and look around to get an Idea.

Are you looking for practicality or cosmetics? Does the rifle have to have a thumbhole stock? If not, you will have many more options available to you.

Pick the gun you are most comfortable with.......you can always put an after market stock with a thumb-hole on it. The sell them all over the place.

Probably the most popular varmint gun going right now is the AR-15 family but they are pretty pricey, just about all of the manufacturers make a .223 heavy barrel varminter so it just comes down to what you what and how much $$$ you want to spend. BTW, Savage makes a really accurate rifle, as does Ruger, Remington, Winchester (U.S. Repeating Arms), etc. You might want to look at some of the varmint sights.

Good advice toolman.......my first thought was the AR15. Always count on a TX'n for good advice......especially a fellow west TX'n! I grew up out that way!

This is how you get a thumbhole stock for the exact rifle you want: 1. Buy wood 2. Buy a saw 3. Buy a drill 4. Buy a Dremel 5. Build what you want 6. Brag

I have Olympic Arms" Ultra Match .223 flat top with 24" heavy barrel. I built this gun myself a few years ago for about 700.00. Same gun now from them will cost about 1200.00. Anyways, its a great varmint rifle. Ive shot groundhogs with it out to 400 yards. Holds a good 1" . You cant beat this gun for acuracy in a semi-auto. True the Remington bolt actions or the Ruger single shots are equally as accurate if not more so. If you dont want to spend a bundle, the Savage tactical rifles are just fine right out of the box. Cant beat them for the money. I guess its all in what you want.
