| Senior Member | It's called a decocker. If the hammer is cocked, you are in SA (single action) mode. This pistol does not have a Browning-type manual safety that works in SA mode. The decocker is the safety. The hammer starts from the "down" position. When you pull the trigger, the hammer cocks itself and fires. This is DA (double action). It is "double," because you can still cock the hammer manually and fire a Makarov in SA, should you want to do so. Here is an article that I wrote to discuss the various operating systems. It's geared to CZs, but I go into more detail on how the SA, DA/SA, and SA/DA systems work: http://pub105.ezboard.com/fczechpist...picID=92.topic No offense, but you shouldn't carry this handgun until you have a working knowledge of its proper operation and necessary handling skills.

| Member | No offence taken Feg, I just thought it was a little strange the way it would trip the trigger when I put on the safety. I'm familiar with my sa/colt .45. I plan on using the Mak. for target and plinking.......if one does not have all the answers ask somebody that does. Thanks! |

| Senior Member | Read stevens article that will help I carry my Mak all the time with the hammer down safety off on a loaded chamber Every day Then ya just got to pull and shoot. I prefer a zippered pocket rather a holster but that is just me. I also prefer S&B fmj ammunition I figure I need All the penatration i can get The 9x18 caliber is adequate for defence it really will knock the crap out of someone it may not be a 100 %guarenteed one shot stop but it will get the job done. its big enough to hold on to and shoot accurately and small enough to fit in a pocket the soviets did their homework on this gun but then when it comes guns they allways do. and inexpensive to it is also made out of STEEL There are a lot of extra stuff avalible right now for the makarov Grips, holsters, barrels, (threaded or un threaded), sights, magazines, Springs, it goes on and on. Ya made a good choice IMHO

| Senior Member | I agree with Dennis wholeheartedly...with possibly taking exception to carrying with the decocker/safety off...I like mine locked where an unexpected jar can't cause it to go off...But we all have to find what's comfortable to us...

| Senior Member | The PM has an inertial firing pin system. It can be carried safely with the hammer down and the safety on the fire position. If you are uncomfortable with this, order springs from Karl at makarov.com or Wolff Gunsprings. This is actually the way that the pistol was designed to be carried "in the field." Eastern European gun springs tend to be a little weak, so new recoil springs and firing springs would be a good idea anyway. Wolff packages a new FPS with their recoil springs (no charge).
