You can't go wrong with a Remington 1100. Don't worry too much about getting an expensive rifled barrel. At the ranges you'll be shooting a smoothbore should work just fine.

My smoothbore 12 ga. 1100 puts the "two bucks for a box of five" rifled slugs in a 3' group at 50 yards - plenty accurate enough for deer.

If recoil is a problem, consider a 20 ga. Some "experts" will tell you a 20 ga. is too light, but this is BS. At close range a 20 ga. slugs hits like a .45/70 and will flatten a deer right quick. I've seen it happen, and I'll bet some of other guys on this site can verify.
