Hello. I'm told that the original reason for the hole was to allow for easier withdrawal of the first magazines, which were not designed to drop free as they are now. With the slide removed you can see parts and as I carried my G26 almost exclusively in a Galco pocket holster, I was forever cleaning lint and debris from that area to avoid it working its way possibly into the guts of the gun. That said, it had never caused a problem without the plug.
