270 vs 308

Been kicking some things around...and the 270 got my attention a while back....but the 308 and 270 seem pretty simaler in terms of FPS....308 has more variety of bullets....so as I sit here scratching my head trying to figure out the diffrence I figured I would ask the experts....So what is the diffrence in preformance..useage ect between a 270 and 308???

270 uses a 3006 case and is a fast mover but your limited on bullet selection. The 308 has a wealth of choices from 110gr to 250 grain . I have shot both and if I want flat out performance and variety I go with the 308. I I want the case and the powder of the 270 then I already have the 8mm

selection would be up to its ultimate use. of cours the 308 has a larger selection of bullets for the handloader.

I've used both cartridges and feel they are very similar in performance. In my opinion, choosing between them is an emotional decision. I would choose the one that seems cooler to you personally.

I have killed a lot of deer with my .270, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 white-tailed deer. I've used bullets ranging from the 120gr to the 150gr in all varieties. Out of all of the deer, I only dropped one. I always go for the center mass chest shot. There was always an exit wound you could put your fist through, but the deer always ran 50-150 yards. I even had one jump a 6 foot fence after a heart shot. I've shot deer with smaller calibers than the .270 and dropped them. I have talked to other people who have had the same thing happen with their .270's I love the caliber, but I am unsure about the performance. .308 has obviously proved itself on the hunt and in battle so I don't think you can go wrong, but if you are looking at something that kicks like a .270 why not a good ol' '06. It is flatter and shoots those higher weight bullets better than the 308.

Just about what Ive been comeing up with looking a loading data....Im leaning towards getting the 270barrel for my NEF...I have a 308 French MAS 36 bolt action....but have been debateing getting a modern barrel for my NEF with a drilled scope mount as opposed to the B-Square MAS set up....the 270 cartrige looks like a monster compared to a 308 but books and you guys seem to agree that there about the same (close enough for thhe way I shoot) ......oh well back to doing the winnie the poo thing and sitting here going "think think think".

308 is as far as I know a little more inherently accurate. You'll see more guns chambered in it with attention to extreme accuracy. Only advantage I see to the 270 is that it shoots flat. But I'd stick with the standard 308 and just get comfortable with its ballistic trajectory.

I used to shoot hunter class benchrest. The .308 is better in working up a consistent lighter load for the range than the .270 Win and is thus less punishing to shoot. Choice in match grade bullets was much better as well.

I have owned 6 .308's in my days and only 1 .270, I just like the .308! Either one will hammer any deer that ever walked.

I dont mess around i shoot my game with my beloved 7mmag, they will drop and crumple instantly, 270, 308 are under powered for things like elk, they are ok for white tail but not mule deer, my saiga 308 only shoots cans, when i hunt its with calibers that will bring my quarry down right away I hate chasing blood trails

Interesting, I always thought 270 was plenty sufficient for deer. Glad I've always been a 30 caliber man.

7mmag, I guess I gave the wrong impression, I have only gut shot one deer in my life. It was running. All of my shots are 2 inches behind the shoulder and always destroy the lungs. And I agree after gut shooting that one, I will never gut shoot another. It wasn't a pleasant experience.

I have dropped at least a dozen whitetail with .270, 150gr JSP. I have had a few run on me, but not consistently. In my experience, there is no inherent accuracy difference between .270 and .308. Both are more accurate than .30-06.

My last time shooting a whitetail deer was October of 1998. I was using a Winchester model 70 post '64 .308, that's my Dad's. It has a Metalife electroless nickel matte finish. The load I used was a Hornaday Light Magnum 165 gr. Spire Point. I dropped the deer from 283 yards in the kneeling position. It was a doe and weighed around 170lbs. The doe was facing right, and I aimed for her upper front shoulder. The shot went 1" higher and took out her spine, no running, no blood trail, she dropped so fast in that cotton field, I thought I had missed her, (I couldn't see her at that distance lying in the cotton). The Hornaday LM 165 gr. had an exit wound about the size of silver dollar. Two vertabre, shattered were lying underneathe the deer. It looked like surgery, I was amazed at the long range accuracy and the performance of this round. Hornaday LM is on the top shelf of factory hunting ammunition in my opinion and from my experience.

270 was my first rifle. I live in Western Wyoming where we only have mule deer. I have killed several muleys over the years. The 270 is great for muleys, I have shot 3 that didn't take another step. I used 180 gr. ballistic tips.

i dont think a 270 or 308 will bring down a whitetail at 300 yards to me the drop in shell drops bad. but my 7mm you cant go wrong . i hunted last year in alberta canada i seen this very big whitetail at 328 yards i was hunting with 270 loaded with 140 grain i did not shoot ps my friend kill a 428 pound whitetail with 36 in neck it score 202 bc but it was kill with 30.06 329 yards to me the 308 would not have kill deer why at 300 plus yards the 308 or 270 drop so bad you need a adding machine but that just my thinking

.308win.-,150gr hornady SST,300yds-2328fps-1805ft lbs.center at 200yds-drop -7.1" at 300yds. .270win.-150gr sierra game king,300yds-2430fps-1975ft lbs-center at 200yds,-6.5" at 300yds 7mm rem.mag.nosler bal.tip,300yds,2436fps,1848ft lbs,centered 200yds, -6.8" at 300yds.Your 7mm came out right between the .308 and .270.I have a little trouble believing that 428lb whitetail story too. sam.
