I'd agree with the .308, unless you wanted to get into extreme-long range - that's where the magnums would shine.
I'm partial to Savages, especially with the new adjustable trigger - very nice! They tend to be more affordable than the Remchesters, though you can find used Remingtons and Winchesters for a decent price.
