This forum a little empty these days? How about some not-so-freakish conversions by BattleRifleG3! Made due to persistent requests at the Saiga forum, here are some wooden forends for the Saiga rifles and shotguns, specifically no-gunsmithing handguards for the S-308 and a custom one for the S-410.

BRG3...what kind of wood did you use on the guns pictured above? Looks like a lot of hand carving is necessary on the forestocks.

The Schnabel forend for the S-410 is walnut by request. The light colored handguards are pine and are just proofs of concept. The full length handguard on the S-308 is maple, as is the darker colored short handguard on the same rifle.

Believe it or not, making handguards for the regular AK would actually be more difficult, at least if it had to fit in the retainer. I could do it though. And full length handguards would be almost as easy. I currently do all dealings at the Saiga forum. I talked to Chris back in the day about advertising on this site and we had a tentative arrangement that I never followed up on because I was pretty busy finishing school. I should touch base with Jesse on the matter, but would love to help support this site.

Birch would be a good wood for you. Not much more expensive than pine, strong, easy to work, sands and polishes up pretty fine, fairly plain but attractive grain and natural coloring. Poor man's cherry wood.

This was an initial proof of concept. Turned out a little on the small side, so it would make a nice "youth model" stock for a Saiga.

I like the contour of those pistol grip stocks BR, modern and traditional at the same time. It would be a nice option to the standard AK parts swapping and covnersion that people are doing with the Saigas. Has there ever been any word on new Saigas coming in yet? Wouldn't surprise me if there hasn't, by and large, Russians seem to be shrewd and opportunistic in terms of business. It might have surprised them to find out that their products were the cheapest entry in the Kalashnikov market, despite being one of the highest quality.

What I've heard is that they exasperated the heck out of EAA, and have a new importer in the works. But that there's a good chance that they're ignoring the Saiga line while working on a couple military contracts. They'll probably want more money when the Saigas come back. That might be part of theirstrategy of drying up the market. You are dead on about Russian business. I had to study it a bit this past year.

Saigas are great rifles, whether you keep them stock or convert them to P-grip. I also do some stuff for regular AKs. But the Saiga stuff no one else makes.
