Picked up a Saiga, time for a conversion

I love the look of the Saiga and being able to pick it up for less than $230 with tax and all was a steal! I have been reading about trying to use any normal AK mags, and I find that I am going to have to do a conversion with the mag feeder. Anyone ever actually do one of the mag conversions?

I have been looking at a few other sites, and they are pretty informative, but I just wanted to get some advice from someone that has done it before.

My main advice would be to take your time and enjoy the project. This is an opportunity to get a highly customized rifle on a high quality platform at a pretty affordable price.

This site is the definitive tutorial on how to convert your Saiga. I wouldn't say you need everything he uses, just a drill, dremel, and a few small !!!!!!! files.

Any more questions and ideas I'd be happy to go over for all to learn from.

What could you do with one in .308? Is there any high cap conversions? Can you add the pistol grip and folding stock to one?

The 308 hi-cap issue is an old and tired one. An American company is going to be offering mags at summer's end. I have a different working solution, but it requires lots of work and has tradeoffs. The only drawback of the upcoming US mags is price and being exclusive to the S-308.

But all Saiga shotguns and rifles can be converted to pistol grip. Tactical coolness aside, they're shorter, better balanced, and have a better trigger with the US parts conversion.

I haven't seen a .308 except online and the price tag was a bit more than I wanted to pay.

It's worth it if it ever fits your needs. If semi-autos are legal to hunt with in your state, it's quite handy, accurate, and reliable.
