side rail mount

Who all has had good results from mounting a scope on the side rail? What mount did you use?

I bought a mount and put a red dot on mine, but the red dot doesn't seem to have enough vertical adjustment, like the mount is angled down or something.

Consider also a scout rail that replaces the rear site.

I myself have had this same problem with red dot scopes on side mount scope rail on AK 47s. You have 2 choices!! You can use a laser to estimate how much you need to lower your scope, then mill the top of the mount lower in the front and gradually higher to the back with a file, this will give you a bit more play in setting your scope. If i remember mine right 1/16th of a inch is equal to 4 to 5 feet @ 100 yrds give or take!
The second way, is to use a Tactical Reflex Sight which has a red dot and works the best for sighting on a Ak 47. They usually have a lot of elevation adjustment that works well with side mounts.
The best way to set a scope without fireing a shot is to use "Aim shot Laser Boresighter", they are the best dead on sighter for the money.
If you wont to spend the bucks and get a real nice scope, get the Pro Series ATN 4x30 SWAT scope. It is made for fast tracking targets and or moving targets and has a dozen light settings. It cost about $500 TO $600 DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU BUY.

I talked to a guy in optics and he said thry this http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=276579
They are the newest russian military scopes and they work just fine on AK's.

so where are you saying to file? On the rail on the gun or on the inside of the mount?

I didnt think i needed to make a new thread about this...

...but here it is. Is Mikhail Kalashnikov still alive? I saw a special on him on the history channel and he sure seemed like a humble and decent guy.

Nevermind...i did a longer search and found a link for Deadoraliveinfo.com
I figured that would have it. He is only 86. Glad to hear he still is. Great person he is

I had the same problem when I bought the side mount from a range buddy. The vertical rror wasn't too bad, so I was able to shim inside one ring to move the scope. Works well now.

Though, the AK isn't generally accurate enough, in my opinion, to really warrant using a scope. But it looks cool . . .

You file the top of the mount from rear to front to lower the scope. From front to rear to raise the scope . The best way is with a belt sander or grinder be sure you do it as flat as possible.
Be sure not to go to far as your scope mounts wont stay secure.
