| need help with finding my first AK Hey guys I have been looking into purchasing an AK-47. I found one on wantaddigest.com and i was wondering what you could tell me about it and if it would be a good first AK-47. The owner claims it to be an Romanian AK-47 that is New York State legal. He is asking for $400. Here is the picture ![]() I do not know a lot about them but I have been shooting guns my whole life and I have always wanted an AK-47 or an M-16. I'm looking forward to learning about them and shooting them. Thanks all. |

| Banned | My first bit of advice(since you mention NY) is to read up on your local gun laws. Just because someone claims its fine doesn't mean it is, and as the buyer its your responsibility to stay legal. Then again I'm guessing there is a difference between NY city and NY state laws, could be wrong though. |

| I have been looking and apparently its unlawful to own any assault rifles in New York . Now I don't know if there talking about NYC or not but I'm going to call the NYSRPA( New York State Rifle and Pistol Association) and ask them about it tomorrow. |

| Banned | That all depends on what you buy and how much money your wanting to spend. Arsenal makes nice stuff. Their rifles run anywhere from about $550 on up. Accuracy wise I think people have reported 1.5" to 2" group at 100 yards. Maybe some got MOA, BRG3 would know more about that. A Mak-90 is also another good shooter. I know at 60-70 yards I can bust pepsi cans no problem. The WASR's are a lottery. Some people buy nice shooters, some people end up with 6" to 8" groups also. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | The term "assault rifle" is redefined for absolutely every single law. I'm not kidding. Every "assault weapon" law has to define an "assault weapon" and every single one is different. "Anti-gun ploy #37 - classify your 30-30 as an assault rifle." If the AK complies with the now expired 1994 AW Ban it is legal in NY unless banned in your county. In PA we had a law passed that prevented counties from banning guns legal elsewhere in the state. Note that nothing currently imported is called an "AK-47" Heck, nothing currently produced anywhere in the world with maybe a few exceptions is called an "AK-47". Imported semi-auto models include Romanian SARs, WASRS, and ROMAKs, Bulgarian SLRs and SAMs, Chinese MAKs and NHMs, Russian Saigas and VEPRs, and many many many more. Kit builds on US receivers, including professional ones sold by Century, Vector, Ohio Rapid Fire, and others are made on a variety of receivers made by ITM, DCI/NDS, Arsenal, Vulcan, and others. These are the markings to look for to tell what model it is, and I'm pretty dang sure none of them will say "AK-47".
