| Super Moderator ![]() | Lathes are best used when the item is perfectly cylindrical. I do some major contours and inletting with a manual vertical milling machine, the rest are all by carving tools and abrasives.

| Super Moderator ![]() | Wood's the only thing I can generate designs for from scratch. Others I can only modify something existing. Synthetics are a whole different set of economics. Ones of hundred thousand dollar equipment and high volumes, not of individual manufacturing. Well, no, I can do metal too. Want furniture made from solid aluminum?

| Super Moderator ![]() | Solid aluminum would be one heck of a durable stock. It would also be one heavy son-of-a-motherless-goat. Wood is good. Use a basic hardwood, a simple enough style, and a durable enough finish and it will hold its own against synthetic, with the exception that it doesn't bend and bend back like plastic.
