| Member | I found a Yugo AK receiver flat with rails at tickbitesupply.com and was wondering about the specifics of it. I know that it's a receiver that would need to be bent which wouldn't be a problem. I work at a place with an industrial fab shop with several size and configuration brakes. What I'm wondering about is how it becomes an actual firearm. The site states: "Please note that an individual can make their own firearm in the United States as long as they do not sell or distribute it." Would I be able to build a complete firing AK kit without having to register any parts as long as I build it with the correct combination of US parts? I am new to building guns so excuse the ignorance. I have an AR lower on order and will start with that, but I'm sure I'll be itchin to build an AK shortly after!! Thanks in advance for any help or info!! ![]() |

| Super Moderator ![]() | You can legally bend a flat and make your own reciever and it counts as a Compliance part. It is not easy to bend one on a brake, they make a special bolt in jig and press block assy. to use in a hydraulic press to make the very tight bends and then bend the top guides over with a wide punch and hammer. They have to be filed and fitted most of the time anyway. You also have to Harden and temper the internal rails and then spot weld them in place. Then you start the riveting and fitting process. If you rivet in the front Trunnion, then you have to press the barrel in a hydraulic press, and It must be lined up perfectly in order to install the barrel pin. The Holes for all the pins have to be heat treated / tempered as well. You should also Stamp your Name and home town and state on it and a Serial Number of your designation. (Can Be 001 or match the trunnion Number !) I have done 1 flat build, 1 bent blank(No Holes) and one factory made reciever.... No registration Required , but you can't sell it Legally ! Rich

| Super Moderator ![]() | Mooseman said it best. Only thing I'd add is that building a firearm at a place of business may have legal and professional problems. You can certainly build one at home with private tools, but it may not be 100% ok to do it on the job. I know there was a company that got into trouble because they outsourced some of their receiver manufacturing to a location that wasn't FFL licensed.

| Member | Thanks guys, good info indeed! Thanks for the pointers and heads up Moose! I've went ahead and ordered a flat as I'm hoping to find an AK kit at the gun show in a couple of weeks. I hadn't thought of that BattleRifle.....I guess there'll have to be an odd looking Jeep peice in the mix of other parts I make!! Seriously though, I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up, I don't wanna make Big Brother mad!! Is there anywhere to find the dimensions of the bends or of the final receiver? Maybe even the blank itself? I'd like to CAD it out before bending to insure accuracy and to calculate the bend allowances. Thanks again folks!! |
