| Banned | Picked up my 2nd AK.. it's a milled Arsenal...
I stopped down at a local shop today to see if my mags for my Glock 17 had come in, they haven't, and noticed an AK sitting on the rack. So I asked to look at it, and what I find, an Arsenal SLR-101. Best part, only $275. The gun looks almost brand new, I hate the furniture on it, and the receiver cover, but all that can be changed. The only down side is it's a single stack rifle, so I've got my next conversion to do. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Man I thought you stole that one until I read the single stack part, still a good buy though, they make nice rifles. My friend had one (double stack) but he sold it to buy a Krink. A cover should be easy to come by and the furniture, well I've seen worse but don't blame you for wanting to change it, I think just a different buttstock would totally change it's appearance. And Pred, did you get my PMs? |

What's involved in a double stack conversion?

Iceman, yeah I got your PM's, sorry, I always read them before I leave for work and then mean to reply once I get there. As far as I can tell, the only thing I'll need to do is take some metal out of the mag well so a double stack mag will fit. Then I'll need to order a G2 FCG, and a stock and grip from K-Var. That should give me the correct number of US parts to be legal. Also, all my mags have at least one US made part, so either way I'll have 6 US made parts.

Great rifle, single stack or not. I don't think that it would be too bad doing the conversion, just have to get a FCG and shave some metal like you said. Man o man is that stock ugly. What stock are you going to go with?

Joes was already machined at the factory for hi-caps - many were, same as WASR-10s. I agree, that's a great deal. Those aren't coming in anymore. If you want to do the opening of the mag-well yourself, I strongly recommend purchasing a vertical milling machine. I know the smallest ones run a few hundred dollars, but this is a serious project and not one I'd trust to a Dremel alone. It would be different on a WASR, since it's just sheet metal, and the load bearing trunion is a separate piece. For measurements, check the mag well of your other AK, as well as some patterns available online. Do it by the numbers, and open it out very carefully. Measure seven times, cut once, and you can always take material off but you can't put it back so easily. Note that the magazine locks up against major load bearing components of the rifle. You do NOT want to shave off any more than you have to to make the mag fit. This is a blow-up issue. Serious injuries make the $1,000 price tag of the high end milled AKs look pretty reasonable by comparison. If you're not up do doing that, I would honestly suggest selling it at a profit. You don't want to screw that dear fellow up.

Like BRG3 said mine was done at the Arsenal factory after it came over from Bulgaria. I almost bought a lo-cap like yours a couple times then stumbled upon mine....$600.00 4 yrs ago...your lucky to find any of them anymore...lo or hi-cap. Been to 15 shows and haven't seen a one except a black .223 Hi-cap last year....$850 before tax.

Well, my Dad has plenty of friends who do gun work, so finding the hardware shouldn't be to hard. I think the first thing I'll do is put a US stock, grip, and FCG on it, and replace the top cover. At least this way if I decide I don't want to go any further, it would be much easier to sell/make more money on it if I've already done this work.

You need a double stack mag, a dial caliper, & a file or rotary tool.If you are able to trim/cut sheet metal, that's it.Take your time and try to keep it as centered as possible, use another gun as a reference.or get a machinest to cut it out for ya..

no doubt it is more complicated, only in thickness and they are steel.you can still do it.etch/scribe the outline of the well spread and file or use a dremel.nothing hard about it except to keep from over doin the well, that's where the marks keep ya from over doin it
