Slings for AK-47

Question about the slings on AK-47's.
Where the sling attaches to the band on the forearm did they use only the metal clip or originally was there a leather tab? Just seems like that metal to metal would wear rather rapidly.

The sling that is customarily sold with most Eastern AKS has a small leather strap that attaches to a button. That secures the sling to the gun.

I am guessing the leather strip looks very much like the type on the SKS slings. Are the AK slings supposed to have that metal clip or does the leather strip go directly onto the D ring?

My Yugo has the rear sling loop on the rear of the receiver and appears to take a short sling. Are such short slings available? And where?
